North Charleston Things to Do

Ice skating is a rare activity in South Carolina. The Ice Palace makes it possible for people in this state to try it out. This really is a big deal for people in Charleston. For a place that hardly ever gets snow but maybe like once every ten years, an ice skating rink is a really cool place!

Also, there is a skateboard park tacked on to the building. It's a really safe professional place, that is super kid friendly.

We drove all the way down Doncaster from the AFB trying to find a place to eat. It was dark and there didn't seem to be many places that weren't fast food chains - plenty of THOSE -- Popeyes, Zaxby's, Subway (2 of them plus a Sub Zone), McDonalds, Captain D's, Hardees, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Waffle House, IHOP. Churchs, KFC, Blimpie's, etc. But we wanted someplace a little better than fast food, where we could sit down and have someone take our order.

Finally we came back to this place with a shiny silver exterior and '50s advertisements on the walls. (It was hard to take a picture of the exterior because it was so dark - see photo 4.)

There is a big diner type menu (photo 3 and 5) with things like meat loaf, country-fried steak, burgers, malts, banana splits, and sandwiches. The people mostly knew each other, but they were friendly.

    Mon.-Sat., 6 a.m.- 10 p.m., Sun., 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

Favorite Dish: Bob had baked lasagna, with a salad ($7.50 - photo 2) and I had Fettuccini Alfredo and lentil soup ($6.95). Both were advertised as homemade. Bob finished his, but I had too much to finish it. The bill was $16.49 before the tip.

As you have now just landed at the Charleston International Airport, in the City of North Charleston you have three real choices of transportation. First and the old standard - a friend or family member picks you up. Second - we have a large selection of national car rental agencies conveniently located near the baggage collection turnstiles. Shop around since their prices do vary a lot. Third - located just outside our terminal building, near baggage pickup, you will find taxi, hotel guest pickup and mini bus service. As you are leaving the airport proper, be sure to notice, just to your left, the newest of North Charlestons major industries. Vought Aircraft and Alenia North America Aircraft manufacturing and assembling major fuselage components for the Boeing 787 aircraft. If you are an aircraft buff you may also catch a glimpse of Boeing's new Dreamlifter cargo planes as they deliver and pickup from the North Charleston factories.

North Charleston Warnings and Dangers

  • by CharlestonSCguy Updated Apr 18, 2007

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I've been to North Charleston before even in the dark. Thankfully, I did not see anything bad
happen there. Remember, not all parts of North Charleston are dangerous. There are places I
like there such as Whirlin' Waters, Carolina Ice Palace, and the Amtrak station. If you are
unaware of your surroundings, don't go to North Charleston. If you go to North Charleston, stay somewhere safe, and don't go outside when it is dark, keep doors and windows locked at all times.
