The hammock was born in the late 1800's on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, one of the oldest and most picturesque summer resorts on the beautiful Lowcountry coast.
The idea for the hammock came from native South Carolinian Joshua John Ward, a riverboat captain who ferried rice and supplies between the vast rice plantations and nearby Georgetown and Waverly Mills. Cap'n Josh found the lumpy, grass-filled mattresses on his boat too hot for the sultry coastal summers, so he set about designing a soft, cool bed that would serve his purpose. The result was a hammock so strong and comfortable that its handmade design has endured for more than a century unchanged and unchallenged. That is the hammock we sell today as the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock.

We grew up going to Seaview Inn on Pawleys every summer, every 3 years or so, we would get a new Pawleys Island Rope Hammock from here to take back home for our back yard. They last 3 or 4 years if, like us, you don't put them up for the winter,,,They might last another year or 2 that way. This enclave has lots to see---hammock making, shops, restaurants and lots of fun stuff for kids.

When a little boy, visiting Sea View Inn on Pawleys, we would spend hours out on the dock with our chicken necks tied to string and a weight catching crabs off the dock on the creek across the road from the beach. We would catch 20-30 in a few hours and would take them to the kitchen and they would cook them for us that night----
We crabbed a bit from our dock at the house we rented this past week and it really brought back great memories...

Even if you do not have a rental house on the beach, you can drive to the south end and park (if there is room!) and use the beach area there at the point....People come all day with wind breaks, tents, food and drink, kites and more-----wish this could be a nude beach---a perfect area for one! You can walk as far as you want towards the north end---and back again! Bring your fishing poles and crabbing nets along with drinks and sandwiches!

There is a marker in front of this uncredible house on the beach---Robert Nesbit (1799-1848), from Scotland originally, had a nearby rice plantation---house was built at least by 1842....

This is the pier near 'downtown' Pawleys Island. The shallow swampy waters are full of shrimp, so bring your shrimp nets.
