    Old City Market: Historic Shopping

by DueSer Written Feb 17, 2009

The main market building is from 1841 and the rest of the market extends out from the back of that original building in open-market-style stalls. There are a lot of vendors here who are catering to the kinds of tourists that are satisfied with a t-shirt or giant pencil or cheap, plastic snowglobe, but if you look past all that, you can find some real craftspeople creating items in a style that has been handed down for generations, namely the sweet grass basket weavers. These ladies are usually easy to find in the market and sell a variety of basket styles. These baskets aren't cheap but they're all handmade - you can watch them weave right there - and made in a tradition that has been passed down all the way from the generations in West Africa.

This is also the perfect place to people watch and just soak in Charleston.

What to buy: Sweet grass baskets for sure and anything else that catches your attention. There are a lot of local craftspeople who set up shop here so you can find some special souvenirs if you look past the t-shirt vendors. There are also some stalls selling local foodstuffs that make for a nice souvenir.

    What to pay: Prices vary.

    Eagles: Beach Supplies and Souveniers

by Astrobuck Updated May 31, 2006

You will find these shops all over Myrtle Beach. Others include Pacific and Wings. I personally recommend Eagles due to the selection, pricing, and neatness.

What to buy: Chairs, sunblock, towels, umbrellas, clothing and other types of supplies. You can also buy postcards and other types of souveniers, but be forewarned of the cheap quality.

What to pay: Prices tend to be very reasonable.
