fog in the morning

by davecallahan

Every time we travel I-95 through South Carolina before 10 or 11 in the morning, we run into miles and miles of dense fog. I assume that it is due to the moist air in the region from the ocean and the many lakes and ponds and swamps near I-95.But it is a real danger when you cannot see more the 4 or 5 carlengths ahead and you are traveling at the maximum speed limit (and maybe a shade more).Consider yourself fairly warned.

Alligators

by Tom_Fields

Once on the Endangered Species list, alligators have made a comeback. Normally shy, they rarely attack people without provocation. Don't tempt them, and above all don't ever feed them! Keep your distance.

hot, hot, hot...

by MandaJ320

South Carolina very easily gets up into the 100's in the summertime. It's very easy to get burnt or overheated outside if you're not careful. The heat starts around April and lasts until October. The hottest months are in July and August.

When you see this truck, (Hurricanetrack.com Truck) with all the weather gear on top, what comes to mind is NOT, glad he's here now I'm sure it will be sunny days to come. NO, IS THERE A STORM COMING I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT, DID YOU CHECK THE WEATHER AND DID YOU GET THE TRIP INSURANCE FOR THE BEACHFRONT RENTAL????

Think trip insurance!

Although we did not encounter any problems while in Myrtle beach, I just want to warn you, that if crowds, teens, kids, etc, are not your cup of tea, stay away from Myrtle Beach between end of June and middle of August...This place comes alive big time, during Peak Season, however, if that time period is the only time you can go, use common sense, and plan your days...Use an itinerary, and you will be fine...Otherwise visit after labor day weekend...

Starting from early spring on until late fall, the whole state of South Carolina is hot and humid. Columbia is the hottest part, while it has a lower humidity than the coast. When visiting Charleston especially, wear good sneakers and a hat. The sun can be intense and it can get extremely hot. Also for the evenings bring bug spray for the 'no-see-ems'. They are little bugs that HURT when they bite! Also, due to its compact nature, Charleston can be difficult to park in. I recommend the parking garage off E. Bay St., behind Subway. It is relatively cheap and it is usually less crowded.

When traveling through SMALL TOWNS, obey the speed limits PLEASE! They WILL stop you. Also most smaller towns have noise ordinances. If you have booming music or something like that just turn it down. You'll save yourself a fifty dollar ticket. Also watch out for deer! They are everywhere. Don't speed on those curves. And if staying in the country be careful crossing the 'road' to get your mail. People speed on those roads.. Just be careful!

Many small towns in SC keep the budget up by issuing sppeding tickets in 'speed traps'. Many towns have only a few roads and the main highway leading through town drops from 60 mph (100 km/hr)to less than 35 mph. Watch your speed.Generally drinking water and sanitation is excellent except for the smallest towns and 'on the highway truck stops'. You have never lived until you have experienced a small store restroom on a secondary highway in SC.

Though the southern mansions are great to see, the people that live there take their privacy seriously and don't take kindly to intruders as evidenced by some big fences and sturdy gates.
