Yemassee Things to Do
Other VT members have posted tips about the old Sheldon church (see Beaufort). It is located between Yemassee and Beaufort and is a good idea for a quick off-highway side trip.
Just south of Yemassee exit 1-95 at Exit 33 and follow signs for 17 to Beaufort / Charleston. Pass the Best Western and follow the curve to the right toward Beaufort (Trask Parkway Hwy 21). The landscape is mostly bushy after that. Look carefully for Cotton Hall Rd on your left side. Turn left on Cotton Hall Road and watch for two lovely plantations - Tomotley and Cotton Hall. The road passes over a railroad track and curves sharply before merging at Old Sheldon Church Rd. Turn right and look along your left side for a historic plaque sign and the ruins should appear on the left. Te road is posted 'no parking' and it may be possible to park on a small side-street called Baily Rd. Be careful crossing as there are curves at both ends of this stretch of Old Sheldon Church Rd.
On the map, the ruins are located at the big red dot, and the potential parking sidesteet is shown as a small red dot.
Old Sheldon Church Rd is shown on maps as ROAD 21 and Trask Parkway is shown as Highway 21, and this has caused much confusion with written directions.
To return to the highway, continue on Old Sheldon Rd. till it meets Hwy 21/Trask Parkway at Garden's Coners. Turn right to return the way you came.Related to:
