I really really wish I had taken a picture of this place. It's a two story framed restaurant with a bright purple and brown front. This crazy place is the Purple Pie Place. I had heard about this place before and had to try it for desert even though they serve much more than pie.
This is really a fun place. The waitresses and waiters really enjoy working here and there good service shows. I had the rhubarb pie with ice cream. Wow the rhubarb, which appeared to have a touch of strawberry added to it, was sensational. The pie crust was just average though. The ice cream melted on the hot rhubarb. What a taste sensation. They also had many other pie choices including a bumbleberry pie. The bumbleberry according to the web site consists of," a concoction of rhubarb, blueberry, strawberry, apple and who knows what else." Guess I will have to wait til next time to try it. By the way you can order anything from the menu including pie to go.
I understand that during the summer the waits for pie can be long and especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August.
The hours of operation apparently change with the season. The web site does not indicate current hours either.
Favorite Dish: Hot rhubarb pie with ice cream!
This is a new restaurant in Custer, South Dakota. It is located in the southern part of the black hills region of western South Dakota. Mount Rushmore, Crazy horse mountain and the Needles area of Custer State Park are within a few minutes of here. It's in a beautiful mountain setting.
This restaurant will stay open all year, unlike most around this area(including all in Custer State Park).
Favorite Dish: Buffalo steak. These are locally raised bison, so the meat is as fresh as it gets. Never frozen. The side dishes are usually hand made. they serve a sweet potato casserole that melts in your mouth!
The Legion Lake Lodge is located next to Legion Lake which is named for the American Legion Post that leased the area. Inside you can visit the gift shop/store, the dining area, rent a boat, or rent one of the rustic cabins by the lake. The dining area has some wood and lots of windows. The food tends toward burgers and other light fare but when I was there they had a special; "trout grilled in a pecan butter sauce". It was quite good. They also serve a variety of freshly made pies. The wait staff was very international (two Malaysians, one Taiwanese, and a Honduran).
Favorite Dish: Grilled Trout.
Not really a restaurant as much as a grocery store with picnic tables. You can get some cold sandwiches, pop, and junk food here. One of the few places we saw where you could get some food within the park. Standard convienence store prices and quality.
