Onida is a small town of about 700 (down 8% since 2000) located along US Highway 83 in Sully County in Central South Dakota. Onida was settled in 1880 by settlers from Oneida, New York who named the town after their place of origin; but with a different spelling. Onida is the county seat of Sully County. Sully County was named after General Alfred Sully, who was a military officer in the Civil War and the Indian Wars and was also an actor. The Sully County Courthouse is a very nice one and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
