    Sunscreen and Lip Balm!

by axeeugene Written Mar 5, 2006

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Under no circumstances should you be without sunscreen and lip balm when you visit the Dakotas. Trees are rare in most places across the northern plains, so of course shade is hard to come by. And you'll be surprised by how dry the air can get in the summer--your lips will crack with ease if you're not ready to protect them.

    Layers are a must

Luggage and bags: Bring as much as your stay requires.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you are going to be hiking or snowmobiling, be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes, many layers and good solid boots/shoes. Weather can change rapidly and it can be quite windy.

Photo Equipment: You will want a polarizer or a good telephoto, and wide angled lenses. There is incredible landscape to take in as well as wildlife to see-though sometimes at a distance.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Mosquito repellent, I got bitten as soon as we got into town, then many more in the evening lighting ceremony.

Miscellaneous: Flashlights, to be able to see if you're going out at night, if you want to see the sculpture more clearly in the lighting ceremony bring more powerful ones.

Luggage and bags: These tips refer to a camping or hiking trip in the Black Hills: a fanny pack or daypack is essential for carrying water and snacks for the hike.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring hiking boots and plenty of warm clothing for the evenings. There is no humidity in the Hills, so it never seems horribly hot. Be especially sure to bring warm pajamas if you are camping. It gets quite chilly, even in August.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring anything you need in terms of medical supplies, as you don't want to drive to Rapid City for everything. Custer State Park has showers, but the Black Hills National Forest does not, so pack accordingly.

Photo Equipment: Bring all the film and equipment you need. Rapid City is the only good-sized city in the area, and the surrounding small towns do not have good selection. The gift stores in the park are very expensive.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring some matches and newspaper to make a campfire. You can buy firewood in the park and surrounding areas. Also, remember your fishing gear. Lures and bait are very expensive in the parks.

Miscellaneous: Make sure to bring water bottles and a way to carry them if you are going hiking. Harney Peak does not have a water fountain at the top!
