Sunscreen and Lip Balm!

by axeeugene

Under no circumstances should you be without sunscreen and lip balm when you visit the Dakotas. Trees are rare in most places across the northern plains, so of course shade is hard to come by. And you'll be surprised by how dry the air can get in the summer--your lips will crack with ease if you're not ready to protect them.

Layers are a must

Bring as much as your stay requires. If you are going to be hiking or snowmobiling, be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes, many layers and good solid boots/shoes. Weather can change rapidly and it can be quite windy. You will want a polarizer or a good telephoto, and wide angled lenses. There is incredible landscape to take in as well as wildlife to see-though sometimes at a distance.

Family Travel Mosquito repellent, I got bitten as soon as we got into town, then many more in the evening lighting ceremony. Flashlights, to be able to see if you're going out at night, if you want to see the sculpture more clearly in the lighting ceremony bring more powerful ones.

It gets quite chilly, even in August. Bring anything you need in terms of medical supplies, as you don't want to drive to Rapid City for everything. Custer State Park has showers, but the Black Hills National Forest does not, so pack accordingly. Bring all the film and equipment you need. Rapid City is the only good-sized city in the area, and the surrounding small towns do not have good selection. The gift stores in the park are very expensive. Bring some matches and newspaper to make a campfire. You can buy firewood in the park and surrounding...

Unless it's July or August, bring a coat. It's been known to snow in June. August is the only month that SD hasn't had snow!
