These tips refer to a camping or hiking trip in the Black Hills: a fanny pack or daypack is essential for carrying water and snacks for the hike.
Bring hiking boots and plenty of warm clothing for the evenings. There is no humidity in the Hills, so it never seems horribly hot. Be especially sure to bring warm pajamas if you are camping. It gets quite chilly, even in August.
Bring anything you need in terms of medical supplies, as you don't want to drive to Rapid City for everything. Custer State Park has showers, but the Black Hills National Forest does not, so pack accordingly.
Bring all the film and equipment you need. Rapid City is the only good-sized city in the area, and the surrounding small towns do not have good selection. The gift stores in the park are very expensive.
