Salem is a town of about 1300 located along US Highway 81 and South Dakota Highway 38 in the Southeast corner of the state. Salem is the county seat of McCook County. McCook County was named after former Civil War General and Dakota Territory Governor, Edwin Stanton McCook. The McCook County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
