Outside View of Scherr-Howe Arena

On my business trip to Mobridge, South Dakota I took in a couple of high school basketball games. The games I saw were on a Tuesday and Friday night. I was amazed, coming from Chicago that one team traveled 3 hours and over 120 miles in winter snow just to get here. The arena is very unique as I hope these photos show. The Indian murals on both ends of the court were done by Mr. Howe. The Scherr Brothers are local wrestling legends and one of the brothers was the former head of the US Olympic Committee.

Badlands

We climbed up a few areas in the Badlands and went on a short hike on Notch Trail.

Equipment: Bring PLENTY of water, a hat, sunscreen and if you plan on going on a longer hike, I would bring a compass and good map.
Watch out for rattle snakes.

This is a place I would love to go rock climbing at, and some people did.
You need your own equipment, there are no guided tours or equipment rentals that I am aware of in Custer State Park.

We saw bear footprints up there!

Equipment: rock climbing equipment, or at least hiking boots , if you just want to hike the trail to the spires

Harney Peak, Black Hills, South Dakota

The Black Hills rise about 4,000 feet above the surrounding plains. Harney Peak, at 7,242 feet, is the highest point in the Black Hills. It's also the highest peak in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.

A great morning hike in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. Terrific views!

Most kinds of sports activities can be had in SD. Of course hiking is probably one of the most popular with fishing, camping, and hunting also there. In the winter sking, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling are possiable.

Rock Climbing at Palisades State Park

Palisades, SD

Only about 15-20 minutes from Sioux Falls. It is the state's smallest state park. A river has carved some small cliffs and it is a destination for many climbers in the area (since otherwise the country's very flat).

I have not climbed here, but I used to know a lot of people who went here.

Pheasant Hunting

Pheasant hunting is a big deal in East River South Dakota. Unfortantley the state has raised the cost of hunting licenses for non residents and put a time limit of ten days per license. The are still a lot of people who come hunting every year. From the third weekend in October until Mid November, it is a good idea to check ahead for motel rooms. The deer season in Mid Nov does not bring as many but it is still a good idea to check.
