the hunter museum of american art has an excellent collection of classic and modern art. they have a nice collection of 19 th century oil paintings. the hunter museum also hosts traveling exhibitions from all over the country. for those who like classic and modern art the hunter museum is well worth a visit when in chattanooga.
It is a museum within the old 1904 home and a classical contemporary new shiny steel facade. They have American Art, and most is from mid 1800's to current day times. The east wing is from 1975- and the new silve object west wing is from 2005.
The site is on an 80 feet bluff overlooking the Tennessee river. Price is $8.00, but if you use the city discount-get $1.00 off.
The Hunter Museum of American Art is perched dramaticically atop a bluff 80-feet high, overlooking the Tennessee River. It is housed in a large old red brick mansion with white columns - adjoined by a new ultra-modern $19.5 million expansion. The museum houses one of the nation's finest collections of American art. However, to me the building itself is an equally interesting attraction, with the glass walls of the lobby offering spectacular views of the River.
In the museum there is also a new cafe, museum store, and auditorium.
