    Museum of Appalachia

    by flyingscot4 Updated Apr 4, 2011

The Museum of Appalachia is a life-long project of John Rice Irwin and his late wife, Elisabeth. Having just turned 80 years old, John is still very active in the museum, usually found walking around the grounds chatting with visitors or in his office. His daughter, Elaine, has taken over the role of president of this not-for-profit organization. So much for basic information.

Located about 16 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee, I found the museum pretty much by accident by driving by and noticing the welcome sign. I was intrigued, so I returned the next morning and spent the day on the grounds. "Impressive" is not the best descriptive word for this piece of Americana. The accompanying video shows some parts of the museum, but can hardly depict its actual historical scope. The Museum of Appalachia is a "Do Not Miss" attraction and well-worth a day trip. I am unaware of any other pioneer museum like this with the possible exception of Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.

The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program.

Please view the accompanying video for scenes of this marvelous museum.
