columbia tennessee was home to the eleventh president of the united states, james k. polk. his home is located in downtown columbia and was built by his father samuel polk in 1816. the polk home is the best example of federal achitecture that still exists in tennessee. the house displays over a thousand objects that belonged to polk and his wife. an interesting and historical place to visit when in south central tennessee. the james k. polk home is listed on the national register of historic places.
for those interested in james k. polk you can also see my pineville n.c. page for his birth place and my tennessee state capitol pages in nashville for his grave.

I generally fancy the civic structures in America, from the White House and Capitol in Washington, the various state capitols in the 50 states, to the most local version in the numerous county seats -- the county courthouse. So long as you're not paying a ticket, these halls are generally very interesting works of art and the center of rural business in America.

The home built by Polk's parents in 1816 saw the legal and professional start to Polk's illustrious career that culminated in his presidency in 1844. Under no other president, not even Jefferson with his Louisiana Purchase, did the country acquire so much territory.

For some reason, our town is famous for this festival. It's a weekend full of mules (cross between horse and donkey) with mule pulling contests, liars contests, arts and crafts show, gun and knife show, parade, the works. If you've never been, go, get a T-shirt and then you can say you went. :)

Chinese Panda has wonderful food in a very clean atmosphere. Legends Restaurant is also very very good if you don't mind a wait. There are also several other great restaurants: Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays, Santa Fe Steakhouse, La Hacienda, Shoneys.
Legends has a sign out front that always has something wrong with it. At least one light is out at all times, but this gives it character. It's in the middle price range, about like Applebees, and has a back room for big parties.
Favorite Dish: At the Chinese Panda get the buffet, you can't go wrong! If you go to Legends their Chicken Salad on Croissant is amazing and their fruit tea is out of this world.
