There are scores of junky shops in Gatlinburg and a handful of very fine ones. Beneath The Smoke is our favorite of all. It features the excellent outdoor and wildlife photography of Sevier County native Ken Jenkins. Jenkins is a nationally known naturalist, outdoor writer, publisher, lecturer and natural history photographer. His work has been published in 300 national journals including National Geographic, Cousteau, Backpacker, Southern Living and Audubon.
What to buy: Beneath the Smoke carries many fine gifts, works of art, books, etc. in addition to prints of Jenkin's photographs. It is a gallery that no one should miss seeing while they are in Gatlinburg.

As you walk the strip in Gatlinburg you can't help but notice many shops that offer fresh homemade candy. The one pictured is Smoky Mountain Candy Kitchens where large taffy making machines in the window lure you inside for a sample.
Another is Aunt Matildas, since 1939, with two locations on the Parkway. These shops have glass enclosed kitchens where you can watch the tempting confections being made by hand. When I was a kid I loved the taffy. Today I've matured into a full-blown chocoholic and can't resist the creamy pecan fudge.

Gatlinburg has hundreds of stores ranging from the cheesy to the classy. Can't remember any specific names but on entering its easy to tell what kind of store each is. Many hours can be spent (or wasted if you prefer) looking at all the merchandise for sale.
What to buy: There was one store in The Village shopping area that sold nice home made candles. The Village as a whole is an upscale shopping area. Mountain Mall contains a store of just hot sauces. Be forewarned, the airconditioning is Mountain Mall is almost nonexistent. There is also a nice discount book store there and my hubby's favorite tobacco shop. Several stores sold only dog themed items. One store sells only objects that change color in the sunlight. And behind that store was a store that only sold socks. Several stores had henna tattoos for the slightly adventurous who are afraid to go for the real thing. If a person can't find a t-shirt here, than they are just too choosy. One store advertised up to size 8x t -shirts!

This shop is located in The Village Shopping area and has great coffee. I also enjoy the cappuccino's. They have donuts, pastries and breads.
What to buy: I like this shop for the coffee cups that you can buy.
What to pay: Average prices.

There are so many shops to visit that I can not begin to list them all. One of our favorites is the Hay Loft. It has western wear, leather goods, boots, etc. There are all kind of coffee shops, tee shirt shops, shops that have bears stuff,a nice pet store in the Mountain Mall, specialty shops, auto tags, wood signs, plenty of shops to buy outer wear if it gets cold out while you are there. I can go on and on but you must see this place for yourself. Yes it is a tourist town and you can expect it to be busy. That is one of the reasons we go in January or February. You have the place to yourself.
What to buy: If you love bears, they have bear figurines everywhere. It is a great town to shop in if you want to decorate a cozy cabin. I like it because I hope to have a country home one day.
