Lewis' remains were buried, exhumed and re-buried once officials determined beyond the shadow of a doubt that the personal effects and uniform of the corpse in this spot indeed belonged to Merriweather Lewis, captain of the Lewis & Clark expedition. Odds are the poor man was murdered (a blade mark across his jugular), though for years the incident was reported as a possible suicide, using Lewis' own mental imbalances against him. Near the marker are the stone foundations of the Grinder house wherein Lewis was likely murdered.
