Jamestown Things to Do

  • Pickett State Park

Wednesday, May 4, 2014, Tony and I was here a few months ago, but didn't hike here that day. So, we opted to go back here today and hike, and I am so glad we did. First we went to the visitors center to check in and get a trail map. Then we went down by the river to use the restroom and check out the bridge crossing. There is several picnic tables...

Tony and I was traveling in the area for the day on one of hiking adventures. We stopped in this unique small town and found this restaurant. Hard to see from the main road, luckily Tony saw it. I was busy driving looking for something on the main drag..but this one is located off Rt 127 in a shopping center behind the bank.

We went in and the place was not that busy. The waitress asked us how many in our party and then said Seat Yourself anywhere. So we chose a colorful booth about halfway back..not too close to the door and not too close to the kitchen either.

The decore was typical..nothing fancy. Our waitress asked for our drink order. I took a soda and Tony took a sweet tea..we were informed that we were in a dry county so NO BEER FOR TONY...lol !!!

Tony ordered the Shrimp Chimi with side of beans and rice..and I chose the pick two combo with crispy taco and tostado with beans and rice...we asked for some spicier salsa the one that they brought us was good but no heat at all.
She gladly and quickly brought the new salsa...not to bad..definitely not like the previous one..I found by mixing them together I got the best flavor..still had to add some hot sauce off the table to give me the right balance of heat.

The food was pretty good. Not the best but typical.
Would choose again since there is not a lot of choices there.

For us it was a caravan of three cars from Dayton, Ohio to Lake Cumberland where we unloaded all our supplies and headed out on our rented houseboat for the weekend. We had two small power boats as added transportaion, so we could leave the houseboat anchored. The picture shows us leaving the dock. The rental company drive the houseboat out to open waters - then the rentors take over. Opposite happens upon arrival. Good idea - when you have inexperienced drivers trying to manuver those big houseboats - it makes the dock last a lot longer.

Be on the look out for water floatation devices that tend to become almost “life like”. Especially when they are left alone with lonely women. This character, better know as “Herman” was inserapable from one loney women.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: About the only thing you have to bring is a swimming suit or two and a towel. Think about it - you are on the water. I guess you could bring other articles of clothing if you want. You will need to bring your own food & drinks. Almost everything else is provided. It is a “dry” county - meaning no alcohol. But that does not stop people. I saw more houseboats loading case after case of beer than there was food or clothes.

Photo Equipment: Don't forget your camera, film and other supplies. You may never be back here again, so take a picture.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Some sunscreen would be a good idea. Sun really reflects off the water.
If you fish - which we don’t - bring your gear.

Jamestown Off The Beaten Path

Many of the scenic coves are off the beaten path. You don’t know what they look like till you go down one of them. This view is where we were docked. It is off the main lake - so you do not get the waves from the main lake. The shore line is rather steep in most locations - but is very scenic. Besides being off the main lake and not dealing with waves rocking the boat, it is much quiter in the cove.

Tubing - This was my first experience at tubing. It was blast. First day we layed on the tubes. Later that night my arms were rather sore from hanging on so long and using muscles that normally were not used. My privates also took quite a beating hanging off the end of the tube. Switched to more of a sitting style the next day with better results....

Floating - This was one of my favorite activities. We took inflatable rafts - and since we were back in a private cove - we just floated on the water and passed the time away. It dosen’t get any better than this - especially when you are with your friends.
