    Botanical Garden

by grandmaR Written May 16, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We went to the Botanical Gardens and walked around there - the little trolley train was broken and they didn't have money to fix it. Not much was in bloom - some crocuses, a lot of daffodils, and a few camellias. But it was a proper Botanical Garden with everything labeled.

We looked at the big koi (there was no food in the feeders for them, and watched the Canada geese honking, hissing at each other and running around in the Japanese garden.

Leatherwood Creek Church is located between Dover, and Paris Landing Tenn. This is the new church they built to replace the old Asbury Church. There is alot of good fishing in Leatherwood Creek and Paris Landing area, about 100 miles from Memphis.

Erin Tenn, is a small country town about 100 miles from Memphis. It's close to Leatherwood Creek, and Paris Landing. I have realtives that live here. Not alot to do, but ride up and down the strip. There are a couple of motels in town. (P.S. they roll up the sidewalks early).

    Memphis Belle

    by Tom_Fields Written Feb 4, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This was the first USAAF bomber to complete 25 combat missions over Nazi Germany during World War II. This was BEFORE the Army Air Force had long-range fighters (such as the P-51 Mustang) to escort the big bombers into the heart of the Third Reich and back to bases in England. No mean feat it was. It was re-created in a contemporary documentary and a more recent movie.

The plane used to be at Mud Island, but the USAF is planning to move it to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. RIght now, it is at the Jim Webb Restoration Center. This is near the airport; check the web site for latest information.

    Reelfoot Lake !!!

    by eddieboy726 Written May 11, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Reelfoot Lake is about 100 miles north of Memphis, in Tiptonville Tenn. When we were there it was raining-cold & snowing. It's suppose to be a pretty good fishing lake. Unfortunately we were at the right lake, but at the wrong time.

    The Folklore Store

by Tuesdaysraven Updated Jul 26, 2008

The Folklore Store is on the main drag, the Main street and Riverfront trolley cars pass by it. It sells crafted souvenirs as well as having a fantastic gallery out back where they have bands play, have some cool artwork on display and (when I went) a blues musician with local knowledge who was happy to chat about the finer points of Memphis music history. I'd recommend a visit to this store because the owner is very friendly and genuine - she went out of her way to help me when I paid a visit there with no gain to herself, and the atmosphere is warm and interesting. They serve coffee and snacks and are happy to chat about music.

Note - this is listed in some places as being a cyber cafe but it doesn't operate as one any more (I went there in May 08) because there wasn't enough demand for it in Memphis apparently.

    Issac Hayes' Grave

by TravellerMel Written Jul 29, 2013

OK, since you are at Memorial Park Cemetery anyway to see the Crystal Shrine Grotto, just cross the street to see the grave of singer/actor Issac Hayes. It is a beautiful and detailed grave.

    I'm goin' to Graceland too!

    by jasta_305 Written Mar 15, 2005

what trip to Memphis would be complete without a trip to Graceland too, yes, I said Graceland too...Not the Graceland Elvis lived in but the home of Paul McCloud, probably the biggest Elvis fan in history. You have to see this place, I mean if you like off the beaten path, meeting new and "unique" individuals this is the place to go. This man has devoted nearly his entire life to memorilizing Elvis, he has even painted and re-created his home to look like Graceland...
I mean really the place is amazing, his devotion to Elvis is truly... weird and amazing all at the same time. His house drips of Elvis memorabelia, and he runs the tours 24 hours a day, all you have to do is knock on his front door. It may take him awhile to get to the door, but have no fear he will answer. It's like 5 bucks to get in and you get your picture taken with Elvis, (okay it's really a cardboard cut out of the King) and after 3 visits you become a lifetime member and can come anytime you like for free, Paul is willing to tell you all sorts of crazy stories about how he divorce wives over the King and how his son, Elvis Aaron Presely McCloud looks just like Elvis.
The house is located in Holly Springs just between Memphis and Elvis' birthplace, Tupelo.

Im so tired of being alone....

    by Sarah169 Written Jun 19, 2003

This was definately the icing on the cake!! We'd heard a rumour that Al green was reverend at a church on the outskirts of Memphis, so we set off in search, with great sucess!!

Although we didn't get to see a sermon, we did get to the church!

Its on Hale Road, but i couldn't tell you how we got there without a map!

  • I know this sounds goofy but...

by salway Updated Aug 26, 2002

I know this sounds goofy but we like to play miniature golf when we're doing the touristy stuff and there is a really cool place in the Peabody Place Mall downtown (next to the duck hotel). It is completely lit with black lights and painted with day-glo colors. It was wild.
