Antique trolleys service the downtown area, including the Pyramid, Beale Street, the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Cook Convention Center, Memphis Queen riverboats, the Tennessee Visitor's Welcome Center, Auto Zone park and more. The trolleys are a nice way to see the city if you don't want to walk. You can take the Riverfront Loop trolley that runs alongside of the Mississippi River, with nice views of the Hernando Desoto bridge, the Pyramid, Mud Island, and other attractions. The cost is $0.60 during regular operating hours and only $0.30 during lunchtime (11:00 am - 1:30pm) Regular Hours: Monday - Thursday 6:00- 11:30pm Friday - 6:00am - 1:00am Saturday - 9:00am - 1:00am Sunday - 10:00am - 6:00pm Check the website below for more details. The best way to get around town in Memphis is to rent a car. There are several companies to choose from, but I am recommending Enterprise Rent-A-Car simply because they have over 40 makes and models, including minivans, SUV's (Sport Utility Vehicles) luxury cars, and 15 passenger vans. They also offer a free pick-up service that is not limited to a 5 mile radius like Budget Car and Truck Rental. I have not used them, because I live here and drive my own vehicle around town. The car in the photo was parked in the Peabody Place parking garage, when I went to see the world famous Peabody ducks. I only wish it was mine. Here are a few others you may want to check out: Avis 1-800-331-1212 http://www.avis.com National Car Rental 901-345-0070 http://www.nationalcar.com Budget Car and Truck Rental 901-398-8888 or 800-527-0700 http://www.budget.com I do not know the price comparisons, and of course, it would depend on the type of vehicle, mileage, and length of rental, etc. that you would require for your visit, but there are several options available to rent a vehicle in Memphis. If you can afford a ride around town in a horse drawn carriage, then I suppose it could be fun. Personally, I think they are overpriced, but they seem to be popular with the tourists. There may be different companies with slightly different rates, and I noticed some drivers bring along their pet dog who rides beside them in the driver's seat. The carriages are everywhere downtown, some fancier than others. Unless you plan on them picking you up from your downtown hotel, it is probably not necessary to book in advance. The Main Street Trolley is a unique, inexspensive, and fun way to get around downtown Memphis. The cars themselves are refurbished 1920's street cars, including some reproductions. The line runs in an enormous circle including Main Street, the Pyramid, and Riverside Drive. There are 20 stops along the way where passengers can get on or off. Fare is $0.60 each way or $2.50 for an all-day pass. Exact change is required. Wheelchair accessable. Line stops running at 6 PM on Sundays. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPhone: 901-577-2640

The Memphis Area Transit Authority operates three downtown lines of vintage street cars or trolleys. They are a great way to get around to many of the sights in and around the downtown area and also just to take to get nice views of the Mississippi River. The trolley fleet is mostly made up of restored Portuguese and Australian street cars some dating back to 1909. They look brand spanking new and are very attractive. Fares are $1.00 per ride or you can get a 2-trip pass for $1.50, a one-day pass for $3.50, or a 3-day pass for $8.00. There are also other pricing options and discounts for seniors and persons with disabilities. Service is pretty extensive as well. All three lines operate 7 days a week with the more popular Riverfront and Main Street lines running every 10 minutes. Go to the website to get the details on schedule. This website also has a nice write-up on the history of this restored line: http://world.nycsubway.org/us/memphis/ Leave a Comment

For the whopping sum of one dollar you can save yourself the ten block walk from the foot of Mud island to Beale or vice versa. The trolley runs down the main street and stops at almost every block, leaving you to walk just two blocks west to the Mud Island stop or one block east to the nightlife on Beale. The car we rode in was a true antique, as you can see in the photo, with a design probably around 1900. I don't know if they are preserving them or simply haven't bought new ones, but you can see the controls in the picture behind Miyuki and Nina. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

There are two trolley lines in Memphis. One is a circle which goes along Riverfront and around to Main. In the middle of Main, you can transfer to the Madison Street Trolley. We got off at Madison. There was no trolley stop station for transferring to the Madison car, but eventually, one came and we transferred. The main feature of the Madison car was going by the Wonderbread bakery, which you can tell by smell alone. At the end of the line, we paid again (another $1.00) and got another transfer. We picked up a lady in a wheelchair when we went over Presley Blvd on the way back Leave a Comment

One of the first things we saw when we came across the bridge to Memphis, was the monorail station near the visitor's center. Each time we went by, we tried to figure out how it would work. It did look like we could walk across above the monorail. According to my tourist guide, the monorail would start running in March, so while we were driving in, I called the Mud Island people, and they didn't answer the phone, so I called the visitor's center. They said that the train was not running, and no one was sure whether it would open even in April. So we never got to see how it would work, and we never were able to visit Mud Island either. The website says: Don’t miss the opportunity to experience great views of downtown Memphis, the Mississippi River and Mud Island River Park. Step aboard a cabin and let our Swiss-made monorail whisk you across the harbor to Mud Island River Park. Traveling at an average speed of 7 miles per hour, each cabin can carry up to 180 passengers for the exciting 1/3 mile trip. Leave a Comment

There are two ways to get to Mud Island. One is to take the monorail, or two, it is to take walkway. The first costs two dollars, the second is free. I wasn't too impressed with the monorail. there was no air conditioning, one set of doors didn't work, and the thing looked in general like it hadn't bee properly cared for since it was installed. It also shuddered to a lurching stop when the ride was over. Whatever you say about the vehicle itself, you really can't bea the views of the river. You get a really spectacular look at both the natural beauty and the city skyline. If you choose the walkway, you're looking at about a five minute walk at a leisurely pace and an elevator or escalator take you up there. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
