by gkitzmil Belle Meade Known as the “Queen of the Tennessee Plantations,” this 1853 Greek Revival mansion was world-renowned as a thoroughbred stud farm and nursery. Today, tours of the mansion, grounds and colossal Carriage House include guides lavishly dressed in period costume. Leave a Comment

by travelmad478 The Hermitage is the preserved estate of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the US. It's located about twenty minutes outside Nashville (drive out I-40 north, get off at Old Hickory Blvd., and follow the signs to the Hermitage). At the site, you can get guided tours of Jackson's home, see the attached gardens and outbuildings, and take a nice walk around the plantation. There's a small museum where you can see items from the Jackson household and the era. Most of this is pretty standard stuff and not terribly fascinating unless you are a real presidential history buff. However, what I found most interesting was an archeological dig of the slave quarters area located in the fields behind the main house. Take the path leading back away from the house, and you'll run into a modest exhibit describing the ongoing excavations here. Finally, the lives of the workers who built and maintained this plantation are getting a bit of attention, after getting ignored for the last 180 years. Leave a Comment

I'm listing this club as "Off the Beaten Path" because it's a private club and being such I guess the average person can't just waltz in. It is located in the Gaylord Entertainment Complex in downtown Nashville across the street from the Country Music Hall of Fame. Incidentally, the Gaylord Entertainment Complex also houses Nashville's NHL hockey team, The Predators, and this club is often used by members of the team, as well as its management and season ticket holders. I managed to end up here at a private Super Bowl Party during my stay in Nashville and I have to say that it's rather nice, so if you ever have the chance to go, go! Leave a Comment

by travelmad478 It may not be a typical tourist sight, but this farmers market is worth a stop if you have time. There are several pavilions: a great vegetable market, a swap meet section, a gardening and nursery area, and an extremely impressive international food market that serves all of Nashville's immigrant communities. And no, I don't think the Spam truck is a permanent feature of the farmers market! But I couldn't help taking a picture of it...up north, we don't see this sort of thing very often. The Mansion by Rabbityama The Hermitage is the home of America's seventh president, Andrew Jackson. The mansion that exists there today has remained the same since 1836. The original French wallpaper, chosen by Andrew Jackson, is still on the walls and in good condition. In order to enter the mansion, you must have a guided tour. No one is permitted to roam freely in the mansion. Outside however, in all of the other buildings, you may go inside and explore without a guide. Each building has information about it to read, if you want to learn the historical significance of the building and what it was used for. In the garden, you'll find Andrew Jackson's actual grave. He is buried beside his wife. The hermitage is a great historical trip for anyone interested in American history. (for information on prices, guides, etc. please visit the website I've listed below)

Came here tonight (6/30/09) for the Owen Benjamin Comedy Tour. The venue is "off the beaten path" in that it is not downtown, but rather out by the fairgrounds and Greer Stadium, but distance-wise only about 2 miles from downtown. Anyway, the venue is older, but nice by comedy-club standards. It was PACKED tonight, and the show was really good. By walking in the door, you agree to a 2 beverage/food item minimum - my cheese n chicken basket and LI Iced Tea set me back $20 - again, standard comedy club fare and prices. Overall, it was fun, and I will be back next month to see Henry Cho!

Tha boardwalk at Radnor Lake (not my pic) by Bunsch We had a few hours to kill between our wonderful lunch and flight, so we coaxed my niece to drive us out to a place where we could work off a few calories and enjoy some scenery. She opted for Radnor Lake, which has a variety of interesting trails. We simply ambled around the lake's circumference, but in the process we got to see deer coming down to wade in the boggy surrounds, and a large variety of birds and small woodland critters. It was great to stretch our legs, but I could see there was plenty more to explore (including a waterfall, apparently, although it was too far for us to venture). Park: 6:00 a.m. to Dark Visitors Center: daily Sunday-Monday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

by sargentjeff The Parthenon... It's an exact replica of the Greek temple in Athens, only intact. Inside is the largest indoor sculpture in the United States. The goddess Athena holding Nike, the goddess of Victory. Athena stands 41'10' tall, and Nike is over 6' tall. I was very impressed by this structure and statue. I have been to Nashville several times before I found out about the place. As of June 2002 only limited viewing of the statue is available, as she is being Gilded in Gold leaf. Should be finished by October 2002. Located in Centennial Park downtown. http://www.nashville.gov/parthenon/index.htm Leave a Comment
