places to see

by davecallahan

The driving guide by Russ Manning is a great way to find some of the best scenic places to drive through and get nice pictures. That, along with a good road map of the state, is a must to pack in the car.

(New photo from my recent trip). Wear a good pair of leather hiking boots, if you are planning on walking through the woods, or on trails, and especially around lakes, etc. as there are snakes in Tennessee. Everything is readily available, but in rural areas, or in the Smoky Mountains, it can be some distances between stores or towns. Have essential medical supplies on hand. Insect repellant in the summer, as mosquitoes can be pesky.

Remember the boy scout moto when planing your trip to the Smokey Mountains, 'Be Prepared.' It rains often and can be cold at night. Bring rainwear that breathes when you hike to avoid overheating. If you plan to do any camping away from the main campgrounds call or stop by the Ranger station for a back country pass. If you forget an item, stop by the Happy Hiker store in Gatlinburg near the park boundary.
