Hiking in Smokey Mountains may bring the hiker in contact with bears. Most bear attacks occur when a bear is surprised or protecting her cubs. To avoid this confrontation it has been suggested that noise makers such as Christmas 'jingle bells' could be sounded to alert bears that you are in the area.If attacked pepper spray sprayed in the eyes and nose will deter some bears. This does not work on Grizzly Bears, though. You can tell what kind of bear is in the area if you can find bear droppings. Black bears and brown bears feces will contain nuts and berries and maybe small rodents. A Grizzly bears feces will contain jingle bells and smell like pepper spray!!
