When we were invited by friends to tour the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, I immediately knew my husband would enjoy it. However, I was only going along for the ride. What a surprise to find that I liked it, too! There are over thirty planes displayed within four hangers. All but eight of these planes still fly! In fact, you can schedule a 30 minute flight in one. These planes are in superb condition and sit in immaculate, enclosed hangers. There are special events throughout the year that allow these 'Warbirds' to take to the sky. The museum was founded by Jim Cavanaugh, who wanted to create a 'world-class museum highlighting famous aircraft and aviation heroes'. We saw Fokkers, a Messerschmitt, a B25 and many, many others. I would suggest bringing along the kids or grandkids--it was quite a display! A wonderful gift shop is on the premises, which will cause you to dally for a time. Hours are Mon.-Sat. 9am-5pm, Sun. 11am-5pm. Admission charge can vary, so please call for more details. (Please see my travelogue for lots more planes!) Air Shows have always drawn my husband and grandson; they marvel at the stunts and drool over the airplanes. I joined them on a recent trip to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum for this event and now see what all the excitement is about. Vintage planes were polished up and gleaming on the runway, filling the hangers and soaring over the cloud strewn sky. Former navigators were on hand to tell of their past adventures, to display pictures of their stint or to dispense historical information. Visitors were eager to sign up for flights that day, but the rides were expensive. I attempted to talk my husband into reserving a seat on one, but he thought the price was too much. Maybe one day he'll do it. At the time of the air show, only a single reservation was available and that was on Doolittle Raiders (see travelogue)--the cost was over $300.00. FYI: Warbird Rides: $175.00 to fly 30 minutes in a WWII N2S4 Stearman; $250.00 for a half hour's ride in an AT-6 Texan which flew in WWII and Korea. Passengers must be at least 18 years old to participate.

The rare aircraft display is one of the largest private aviation collections in the country. Dallas millionaire Jim Cavanaugh is the founder of the world's largest commercial cleaning franchise. He is the one who funds the museum and owns nearly three dozen vintage planes. A new editions to his collection is a B-25 Mitchell Bomber.
