This museum is housed in an historic building built by the McGill Brothers who were prominent ranchers in Alice and helped bring about the formation of Jim Wells County. The South Texas Museum houses exhibits tracing the inhabitation of the area from early Indians to modern ranches, oil, railroads, and farms. There are nice displays of household artifacts and stuffed animals. Hours are (normally) 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturday. Admission is free.

Alice is a decent sized town of about 20,000 in the South Texas Plains. The town was once the largest cattle shipping point in the world. It was first named Bandana, then Kleberg and finally Alice after the daughter of Cpt King of the King Ranch. There was also oil discovered here in the 1930s. Alice is the county seat of Jim Wells County. Jim Wells County was formed in 1911 from portions of Nueces County and was named for a prominent Brownsville businessman. The courthouse was designed by San Antonio architect Atlee B. Ayres and the cornerstone was laid in 1912. I especially like the distinctive cupola. Alice is home to the world's tallest concrete water tower (which I failed to photograph, sorry)

Chili's is a chain restaurant, so you know about what to expect. This one had recently changed its menu and I had a very good blackened tilapia dinner. There were lots of cute waitresses working here, so of course, I got the one guy. He was a very good waiter though and very friendly. I would definitely eat here again and would recommend it to you.

I know that there are many places where you have to watch out for animals crossing the highways and streets, but I know that in the Alice area of Texas, we were driving down the highway and almost hit a Road Runner.
