This is the major airport to the city Austin. It sits on the SE side of town, near the Austin/Del Valle city limits. I know all about this area since I grew up there.
ABIA was previous an American mility base known as Bergstrom Air Force Base. The name "Bergstrom" was used because that was last name of the first Austin soldier killed in WWII. More info about the base's history can be found here:

Rumor has it pilots love landing at this airport because of the long landing strips.
The official airport code is AUS.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a great little airport to fly into. I noticed references to a woman named Barbara Jordan found throughout the airport. Barbara Jordan was the 1st black woman elected to the Texas senate and a three-time congresswoman. The airport terminal is named after her.

10 minutes drive from the centre in the south-east of Austin, along 183. From there you can obviously call a Taxi but more cost-effective there is also a shuttle service (SuperShuttle ? 512-929-3900 Opt3, at least one day in advance for return reservation). Between a taxi and a bus, you would do a kind of "car pooling" up to your hotel's door. The cost depends directly on the distance. I've paid 15.75$ but that was probably in the upper limit, my hotel was rather far!!

Welcome to the Live Music Capital of the World. When arriving into Austin, you will be landing at our brand new airport (opened in 99). Austin Bergstrom International Airport is now open for business, and features alot of things not common to normal airports.
The live music that fills the city does not shy away from the airport... make sure you save a little time on your arrival to watch a song or two from one of the many Austin artists that play there!

If you are coming from overseas, or another State, you will most likely travel by plane, or car.
You would need a car to get the most out of your visit to Austin, the city is so spread out, that relying on any other type of transport might be a hassle. However, if you don't want to drive, Austin has a great bus system.

By plane... Texas is no place you want to drive through. There is nothing to look at.
It's very boring, but if you're on a budget, of course, driving is most sensible, but make
sure you're well rested, because there will be nothing to keep you awake.
Like i said in the warnings, walking is best or taxis because downtown Austin during
South by Southwest is very scary. People pretty much ignore basic driving laws &
do what they want so watch out!!!

This entirely new airport was opened in the late 90's on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base.
Southwest Airlines is the King here.

The Austin airport's food court is a HUGE rip off. A burger, no fries is $4-6, fried rice is $9. Be sure to eat before you arrive at the airport or be prepared to pay big bucks for really bad food.
