Photo courtesy of CitySearch.com by ATXtraveler Remember the cartoon Winnie the Pooh... which featured the sad donkey Eeyore... who was always gloomy because he never had his own birthday party? Never fear cartoon fans.... thanks to the hippy population in Austin, Eeyore has not been sad since 1963! Thats when the commune of hippies in Austin originated "Eeyore's Birthday Celebration in Austin, TX at Pease Park. It occurs every April, and is a celebration that is designed for children in the morning... but for adults in the afternoon! You will see the crowd dramatically turn to herbally charged drum circles, and dancing in costumes that are not the best thing for your children to see... but in the morning, it is more like a carnival for them! Austin Art Park by ATXtraveler One of the things that makes Austin such a unique place to call home is the slogan that has been accepted by just about every citizen... Keep Austin Weird. In a collaboration of all the unique members of our community, where you can see a politician next to a high tech computer geek next to a UT student next to a hippy, Keep Austin Weird is more than just a slogan, its a state of mind. This website will definitely give you a taste of many of the things Austin has to offer! Leave a Comment

Alamo Draft House by ATXtraveler Take a date and enjoy a frosty libation, or maybe some nachos at the Alamo Draft House. Yes... you can enjoy a beer with your favorite movie here in Austin... its a great location, located deep in the warehouse district. You have a table in front of your cinema seat, for you to set your dinner and drink... and the crowd makes this a fun place. Leave a Comment

Photo Courtesy of Spamarama.com by ATXtraveler There is no better explanation of what Spamarama is rather than the originators own words: It was the early spring of 1976. Dick Terry and I were fraternizing one afternoon and Dick was bellyaching about how chili cook-offs had become so common-place." I mean, anybody can cook chili." Dick observed, "All you need is some kinda meat, some water, chili powder, comino, and maybe some cayenne, garlic, and/or onion, and you got yer basic chili. If you're from north of the Red River, you might throw in some kinda beans, but basically, that's about all it takes to make 'chili.'" " Yeah, not much of a challenge there, is it?" I responded. " Now if someone could make SPAM® edible," Dick continued, "That would be a challenge. We ought to have a a 'SPAM®-Off.'" " Yeah, a 'SPAMARAMA™!'" I blurted out. "We could ask George Majewski over at Soap Creek Saloon if he'd like to host it, and we could have it on April Fool's Day." " Let's do it!" Dick agreed. And that, in a nutshell, is the beginning of the very first, longest running and funnest SPAM® event in the history of the entire universe. I never thought that it would last more than a year or two. I never thought it would attract more than a handful of Spamophiles who had been cooking and eating the infamous potted pork product since World War II. I never thought there were so many things you could make out of SPAM®! But I was wrong! ....... David Arnsberger The Potentate of Potted Pork Parties Leave a Comment

Howdy ma'am by carlrea What i learnt in Texas is that cowboys are naturally very polite and towards the opposite sex very gentlemanly, like opening doors etc. what i noticed is if you exchange pleasantries with a female, cowboys always tip there hat along with a pleasant 'Howdy' or 'Howdy ma'am' very old fashioned but to me very cool just how it should be. The Originator of "Hook Em" by ATXtraveler University of Texas at Austin cheerleader Harley Clark knew what he was going to teach football fans at a 1955 pep rally was going to catch on faster than poodle skirts and leather jackets. It had to. After all, the Texas A&M Aggies' "Gig 'em" gesture had been around for years. Clark sold the student body on the symbolic approximation of the horns of Longhorn mascot Bevo and, thus, began the "Hook 'em Horns" hand signal. The salute quickly took its place beside the university traditions of singing The Eyes of Texas and lighting the Tower orange. Fellow student Henry Pitts, who had come up with the Longhorn sign during an inspired game of shadow casting, had shown Clark the sign three days before the Texas Christian University game. little butterfly under the rain... by Djinn76 During the Halloween Week End, 6th street is completely invaded by herds of masqueraded/disguised people. Really fun indeed, people are hopping from one pub to the other one. Although the atmosphere was quite nice, there was also a bunch of policemen ready… I’ve been told that a couple of years ago, it ended up by a big riot… This year however, the rain spoiled the pleasure, around 1-2am, violent showers started to wash the streets… Leave a Comment

Some of the nicest people on VT live in Austin! It was a special privilege for me to be in Austin on February 25, 2005 for what I believe was the first ever Austin VT meeting. We had a very enjoyable dinner at Baby A's Restaurant on Barton Springs Road. Although most of us were meeting each other for the first time, it was just like getting together with old friends. Those attending were: Seated, Left to Right asgottl : Amy butterfly_girl: Kym Carlos Yelli: Danielle Standing, Left to Right: walkaboutwally: Sam Stephen-KarenConn: Stephen Skibbe: Scot mertmh: Mark saraheg77: Sarah ATXtraveler: Mark It's always great to turn virtual friends into real ones. I especially appreciate the efforts of ATXtraveler, Saraheg77 and butterfly_girl for organizing the event. Leave a Comment

Tito's Vodka by kd_baby There is a distillery in *far* South Austin that produces an award winning vodka. It has won the Double Gold Award. This is another local favorite of Austinites. AFAIK this is the only distillery in the state of Texas. Leave a Comment
