  • "Climb" Mt. Bonnell

Austin's Mt. Bonnell is one of Austin's oldest tourist attractions being documented as far back as 1850. It is the highest point within Austin City Limits at 785 feet. A wonderful place to picnic in the sun, Mt. Bonnell contains views of Town Lake and the Pennybacker Bridge as well as wonderful vistas of downtown. The area is a short hike from the road and there is no entrance fee.

The view of Downtown Austin from Mt. Bonnell

Many local and travelers have probably heard about Mt. Bonnell, but most have not visited this great Austin Landmark. It is off the beaten path a bit, but this short trip from downtown is well worth the drive when you see the view! Go west on 35th street off of Mopac to Mt. Bonnell Rd. or go west on FM 2222 to the second street named Mt. Bonnell Rd. , take a left and follow the winding
    road to the top.

This is not too far from the city and listed as one of the oldest attraction of the area. Don’t worry, there is not much to climb, you drive almost until the top and you just have to walk the last hundred meters.
The city center is too far to have clear view, however you will have a really nice view of the Colorado river and the surrounding hills. Also, if you like it, you can also see the big houses along the river, most of them have a “boat parking”.

Mount Bonnell is Austin's best hilltop view where you can look over Lake Austin and the Hill Country or look back to the city skyline. You have to climb the 100 steps to the top but the view over the lake area especially is worth it. The homes along the shores of the lake are amazing.

Located on Mt. Bonnell Road, one-mile past the west end of West 35th Exit Mopac at 35th or at RM2222 and head west.

    Mansions on the river

If you take the long path instead of the stairs to the top of Mt. Bonnell, you will be able to look down into the yards of some million dollar homes on the river. They are beautiful! I found it a little sad, though, that not a single home had anyone outside enjoying all that the money had afforded them. Kind of pointless.
