Habana: A little of Cuba in Austin
I love Habana. It's a simple restaurant with simple (but tasty) food. The pastel-colored walls aren't heavily decorated, and the furniture is tasteful, yet traditional and simple wooden. There's a nice patio for enjoying the Austin weather (and a mojito or two). And the food is amazing, whether you're eating fried plantains, fried yuca, or fried pork. Located on S. Congress near St. Edward's University and next to The Great Outdoors, it's a neat location. I think it's one of my favorites in town.
Habana: Delicious Cuban food
I was really impressed with my first trip to Habana on S. Congress, which just opened recently. There is another one downtown on 6th St.
The restaurant was cute, with a little patio out front and a sunny, cheerful interior. Festive music played in the background, but it was never so loud that it interfered with conversation. Our waitress was helpful in explaining what was in certain dishes. When I ordered a vegetarian entrée, she noted that our mariquitas appetizer (fried plantain chips, which taste kind of like french fries) came with a meat dipping sauce and offered to bring a different sauce.
Habana has a full bar and happy hour daily with discounted appetizers. But if you don’t feel like drinking or it’s too early, they also have a great “virgin mojito” that is really refreshing.
Favorite Dish: I had the El Vegetariano platter. It comes with yucca, a starchy vegetable which tastes sort of like mashed potatoes. Also includes plantain (sweetened and caramelized, very good), rice, black beans, spinach empanada. The menu states "Good luck finishing this!!" and I didn't even come close! But the leftovers were good the next day.
And even if you are too stuffed to consider dessert, I recommend ordering a piece of tres leches cake to take home and snack on later. It’s really heavenly.

If you want to try something a little different, Habana is the place to hit. It's got a really cool atmosphere and lots of different food.

Favorite Dish: The appetizer "Maduros" was pretty interesting. It's plantains sliced and deep fried and it tastes amost like a cobbler. It was good to try!
