    Pharrah's: BYOB and Hookah

by klasher Updated Feb 6, 2013

Kurdish, Persian, Armenian, Arabic and Indian food. The decor is intimate, with tapestries on the walls and Indian music circulating through the cozy room. It is best to go on during comfortable weather as their patio is huge with twinkling lights hung from the trees and the scent of hookah in the air. Weekends have a belly dancer for entertainment. You can BYOB and pay a small corking fee. The food is delicious and has a variety of vegetarian dishes as well as chicken, beef and lamb.

    La Mexicana Bakery: Tijuana Northeast

by bpwarne Updated Dec 7, 2012

More than a bakery, it actually has a small menu of Mexican dishes and a small seating area. When we saw this place showcased on an Anthony Bourdain No reservations segment on Austin, we decided to try it out on our next visit. The outside is a bit rough looking and the inside is even rougher looking, but the food is great and the staff is friendly and helpful. We were a bit surprised to see no signage or photograph on the walls touting Tony's visit and there was only one other customer in the place the afternoon we showed up for lunch. The bakery selection is HUGE! Open 24/7.

Favorite Dish: I had the Carne Fajitas (glorified name for carne soft tacos) and Patty had a vegetarian Mexican Tort with Mexican Cokes..

    Schlotzsky's: My Favorite Sandwich

by msbrandysue Written Jul 12, 2012

Schlotzsky’s is one of my very favorite places to eat. It’s a sandwich shop that you can take out or eat in the shop with plenty of tables always available. It’s a bit pricier ($6-7 for a sandwich) than most other sandwich shops but definitely worth it.

It's a place where you order at the counter, then wait for your food and pick it up when they call your number. It's very casual and I'm sure you'll love the food!

    Open daily 10am-10pm
Includes Free WIFI at some of the locations

There are plenty of locations in Austin, around 20 different locations!

Favorite Dish: The highlight is the sandwiches. They make it with thick sourdough bread and very thinly sliced meat. Then they sprinkle cheese (the best is a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella) on one piece of bread and run it through an oven conveyor belt. Therefore the sandwich is warm and very tasty. The Original is their signature sandwich and comes with: “Home of The Original® Sandwich. Lean smoked ham, Genoa and cotto salamis, and melted cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan cheeses layered with black olives, red onion, lettuce, tomato, mustard and our signature dressing on toasted Sourdough bread.” (From the website.)

Their sandwiches are quite large. I’ve never ordered a large, the mediums are quite enough when you’re at your hungriest.

Their original chips are delicious! Their pizzas are as well. The cheese and pizza is definitely worth trying, also cooked on a sourdough. The bbq chicken looks just as good but it’s hard not to get my favorite sandwich, the turkey and cheese.

Uchi: Amazing sushi in Central Texas

    by Wanderlust326 Written Jun 22, 2012

Uchi is a really expensive but incredibly delicious sushi restaurant. It's always on the top of must-eat lists for Austin and for good reason! Their fish is so fresh and its always changing. Check the board for specials of the day.

Favorite Dish: I've never had anything bad off the menu. I love the foie gras and beef tongue pieces. Anything they make that has a citrus sauce or garnish is amazing too. I also really love their pistachio desert!

Jazz, (A Lousiana Kitchen): Great cajun food.

by osiekhan Updated Apr 4, 2011

Really laid back cajun setup. Good size for the location and they also have great drink specials. If you happen to be there for SXSW, be sure to check them out on the last sunday of the music festival. They were having an ALL DAY happy hour the last time I was there in 2k5.

Favorite Dish: The lemon chicken. Hands down one of the best things I've had in quite some time. It was so good that when I speak of my great time in ausin for sxsw, I still (as do my buddies) drift off and mention Jazz's food.

The sign says it all. Also rail drinks were $2.

El Sol Y Luna: Laid back SOCO fun

    by butterfly_girl Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

El Sol Y Luna is a nice, casual place in the SOCO area. The patio is great for people watching. Food is reasonably priced and consistently good. Enjoy a margarita or a pitcher of Sangria and check their calendar for the wonderful music they have several nights a week. if you are lucky you can come on a Friday night when Oliver Rajmani plays. He is an incredible musician!

    Z-Tejas: A Taste of Euro-Texas

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

With two locations in the Austin Area, Z-Tejas is primed for a great taste. Different from most of the Tex-Mex restaurants, Z-Tejas tries for a Euro-Tex-Southwestern flavor that is unique and delicious.

I had the stuffed pork tenderloin this evening, and it really was great! It was mixed with cheeses, chorizo, and peppers.

This also has a great scene to grab a drink at happy hour.

The Arboretum location has some great views of the Hill Country, and the Downtown location has some fun people watching!

BW3 Austin Downtown: Hot Wings and Big TVs

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are looking for a place to sit down in front of the TV and enjoy some pub style food, consisting mostly of chicken wings, then Buffalo's Wild Wings is your place to be. Commonly referred to as BW3, this franchise location in Austin is a great place to sit down and enjoy your favorite sporting event and chow down.

There are normally 10-20 different types of wings to choose from, so give each one a shot!

Iron Works BBQ: BBQ as warm and hot steel

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are looking for a little history with your smoked brisket, Iron Works BBQ is the place to go. After you grab your meal and sit down you will notice the beautiful pieces of iron workings, all done by the Weigl family, a group of German immigrants who migrated to Texas for the opportunity to open up an Iron Mill in the heart of the Wild West.

The spicy sauce for the BBQ is world famous, and the meat is delicious. I would definitely recommend checking this place out!

    Pok-E-Jo's Smokehouse: Pok-E-Jo's? Is this a child's game?

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You will definitely not confuse this place with child's play after your first bite of this delicious BBQ. I tend to eat here for dinner more than some of the other places... as it is nice to take your time and really enjoy your two-meat combo plate, along with your choice of many sides! Creamed corn, corn on the cob, green bean and baked potato casserole are all some of my favorites, but for dessert the banana pudding or pecan pie is a must.

Favorite Dish: Two meat combo, brisket and sausage, extra spicy sauce, baked potato and green bean casserole, texas toast and a scoop of banana pudding is heaven to me here.

Z Tejas: Ya Gotta Try the Jalapeno Margarita

by kxner Updated Apr 4, 2011

The 6th Street Store is Very Funky. A lot of color and character. There are some great shops nearby. The service was friendly and efficient. We went for the Jalapeno Margaritas but discovered the Grilled Shrimp & Guacamole Tostado Bites. Our fantasy ... keep them coming until we tell you to stop.

Favorite Dish: The Tostado Bites (see above) ... Great Hamburger and Tortilla Soup. Is a Margarita a dish? Cuz it's my favorite!

    Trulucks: Magnificent Atmosphere. Mediocre food.

by BellaMora Written Jul 19, 2010

The restaurant was FABULOUS. Piano player in the bar/lounge area, exquisite decorations, highly upscale atmosphere, impeccable customer service. However the food was bland in my opinion. I've had better fish at Landrys.

Favorite Dish: I didnt love it but I had the seared Chilean Sea Bass with Ponchatrain sauce. The fish was very light in texture and very moist but bland. The sauce was ok. I paired it with a Monchof reisling which kept its flavor throughout. The veggies were good that came with it but I wont order it again.

I do recommend getting the date night menu for 3-courses at $35. We wouldve came out cheaper and maybe with better food.
My colleague had the Redfish and veggies. He didnt rave about it so it was mediocre too.
However that would be an excellent place for drinks during happy hour.

    Torchy's Tacos: Trailer Park Tacos

by klasher Written Jun 13, 2010

Food in mobile trailers has rally taken off, but Torchy's is here to stay. Located on South 1st, this trailer has covered outdoor seating and currently shares the space with Man Eats Dog, which sells hotdogs and sausage and the Cake Ball Lady.

Favorite Dish: Love the chicken fajita and the queso!

Unusual and extremely casual place that attracted me by the big green olives on the roof! I had the Dr. Funky Chicken Sandwich, where the chicken had been marinated in Dr. Pepper and various spices. Quite tasty! Service was alright. Vibe was chill.
