Many Austinites know about this theater already, but if you have not been, make sure to visit sometime soon! The audience is always hip, and you can eat a meal and drink beer, wine or champagne while watching the movie. The best part is that you dont have to leave your seat, since discreet waiters and waitresses are at your service. The pre-movie films are really cool.
So, apparently, the Alamo Drafthouse is one of the best movie theaters in the country. The food is really good, but other than that, I don't think the theater itself is all that special. Granted, I've never been to one of their events, like their singalongs. Anyway, while it's a decent theater with good food, I think that if you're visiting Austin, there are plenty of other things to do than to sit in a movie theater (unless the weather is bad). If you're just visiting, then I wouldn't go to watch a movie. Go for a special event they may be having. If you live in Austin, then I recommend going here instead of to one of those gaudy Tinsleltown theaters.
The Drafthouse has a constantly changing menu of movies and themes. Don't confuse this Drafthouse with all of the other chains. This is the original! Films include Indies, Spaghetti Westerns, Silent films with a local band doing the soundtrack, the Gong show, Spike and Mikes Sick and Twisted Festival, Anime, midnight movies, sing alongs, Weird Wednesdays, Sinus Theatre to name a few events. Oh yeah-and they serve beer and food!
Try to catch a flick at the Alamo Draft House. Better yet, try to catch Spike and Mike's Animation Festival there! Too much fun!
The Alamo is a movie theater/bar. They have long tables that run along the backs of the seats in front of you. (Does that make sense?). You get a menu and just check off what you want and pass it down to the waiter. So you basically get to watch movies in a theater setting while getting food and drinks. GREAT IDEA!
