by KenMore The Congress Avenue Bridge spans Town Lake in downtown Austin and is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. The colony is estimated at 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats. Each night from mid-March to November, the bats emerge from under the bridge at dusk to blanket the sky as they head out to forage for food. This event has become one of the most spectacular and unusual tourist attractions in Texas. The most spectacular bat flights are during hot, dry August nights, when multiple columns of bats emerge. There are several points from which to view the event, and an information kiosk is located on the north bank of the river, just east of the bridge. Although bats are generally not dangerous (such as the myths go), a bat that has been captured may be sick and should not be handled. Leave a Comment

The Mexican free-tailed bats by mj9462 This is like nothing that I've ever experienced. After hearing about it for ages and living in Austin for almost a year, I ventured down under the Congress Ave Bridge to see what the fuss is about. What I saw was about 200+ people waiting anxiously for the sun to fall below the horizon so that more than 1.5 million of the bats residing under the bridge could start pouring out. And they do the minute the sun goes down you start to see this steady stream of black blurs empty from under the bridge. As your eyes become adjusted to the sudden darkness you can focus better and watch for about an hour the steady stream of bats venturing out into the night’s sky. The best time to see them is March - September. by SinKitty Congress Avenue Bats. Approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats, the largest urban bat colony in North America, have made the underside of the Congress Avenue bridge their summer home. (Can you tell I copied that from somewhere? heehee.) The bats arrive in Austin in mid-March and return to their winter home in Mexico by November. When in Austin, you must check out 'the Bats.' Just ask, everyone will know what you are talking about. There is a bridge over town lake where around a million bats sleep. At dusk, they all come out and people actually gather to watch them leave. I must admit, it is quite a site. Leave a Comment

Austin is the home of the nations largest urban bat colony. I believe the last count was 1 million +. During the spring/summer months, the Congress Ave. bridge near down town Austin lets loose such a congergation of bats, it looks like a black cloud escaping from under this busy bridge. There are numerous locations to see the bats, on the bridge it's self or in the park along the Colorado River. Leave a Comment

Bat's have migrated to Austin TX right downtown under the main bridge. It is the most amazing thing you will ever see. These bats were brought here from Mexico because of mosquito's that carried disease's. The bats were brought to eat them, which worked. Now there are millions of bats that fly out in streams at sunset. The best time to see them is durring the summer because for the winter most migrate to Mexico. Directions: Downtown Congress Brigde...Heading straight in the direction to the Capital.

One man’s tourist attraction, another man’s nightmare: After Congress Avenue Bridge was constructed it proved to be an ideal breeding place for bats. Millions of them fly around the bridge area in summer after dawn, before heading down to Mexico in the winter. Leave a Comment Address: Congress Avenue Bridge

People do this, usually that means you should avoid it, but in this case it's worth doing. Go to the Congress St. bridge and stand on the east side, just before sunset. Wait, soon billions of bats will fly out from under the bridge, it's pretty cool, they'll keep coming out for... I don't know, 20 minutes or so. Make sure you don't watch from under the bridge, unless you like bat pee in your hair. Oh yeah, this only happens in the summer (I think), definately not in the winter. Address: Congress Ave. BridgeDirections: Downtown - over the river.
