UPDATE: We traveled to Austin recently (Aug. 2008) to discover that the admission was waived during Wells Fargo First Saturdays (held 2-6pm on the first Saturday of each month) AND for Music Under the Stars* (from 6-9pm on the first Friday of each month during the summer).
It's no coincidence this attraction is my first THINGS TO DO tip. The Bob Bullock Museum covered all phases of Texas history and to visit it is a "must"!
The exhibit began with the native people by illustrating their way of life and artifacts from that period. Early explorers were highlighted with interactive displays. The fight for independence and struggle for statehood were explained and contributions of Texas were defined. Be sure to allot a couple hours to tour the museum!
Displays on more recent history showed the evolution of the oil industry, farming and space exploration. The Texas Spirit Theatre recreates events such as an oil gusher, rocket launch and hurricane--believe me, it's realistic! There is a wonderful museum store on the entrance level.
Hours are Mon.-Sat. 9am-6pm; Sun. 12Noon-6pm; closed Jan. 1, Easter, Thanksgiving and Dec. 24-25. Admission is $5.50 for adults; $4.50 for seniors and military; $3.00 for youth 5-18; free for children 3-4.
The IMAX theatre is $7.00 for adults; $6.00 for seniors or military; $5.00 for youth 5-18 and $3.50 for children 3-4years. Combination tickets can be purchased that include both admission and the IMAX theatre.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is a world class facility and a MUST SEE for visitors to the Texas Capitol in Austin. The museum tells the “Story of Texas” with three floors of interactive exhibits, the special effects show, The Star of Destiny, in the Texas Spirit Theater. The museum also house Austin's only IMAX Theatre, featuring the signature large-format film, Texas: The Big Picture.
The first thing you'll see, even before entering the building is a 35-foot-tall bronze Lone Star sculpture which greets visitors in front of the Museum. A a colorful terrazzo floor in the Museum’s rotunda features a campfire scene with enduring themes from Texas’ past. There is also a Cafe and a Museum Store for books, souvenirs and Texas stuff.
The museum is named for Bob Bullock, a former Lieutenant Governor of Texas who was a driving force in the museum's creation.

It's officially known as "The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum". Anyway, this is a cool museum right across the street from UT (MLK & Speedway). It's worth visiting because it has some interactive exhibits, the IMAX theatre, and the bronze star at the entrance.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, what can I say!?! I've been working there for 3 years now and it's a great place to see Texas history, plus we have an Imax Theater. If you come keep in mind the exhibits can take 1 1/2 hours (maybe more) plus you have to see the Texas Spirit Theater, it's awsome. It's a 15 min. history show over the heros and events of Texas past, but it has special effects that bring history alive for you....like thunder, lighting, snakes, and rain. You'll love it! We're open 9 to 6 every day expect Sunday, it's 12 to 6 then. Check out the website for more details and if you come by, ask for me...I'm ususally there or someone will know of me when you buy your tickets.

The Bob bullock Texas state museum is a relatively new museum (a couple of years old) but it is definitely worth a visit. I arrived there without too much clue about the Texas (or even the US) history. I was not too sure if the Alamo battle was related to an issue with the Indians or with the Mexicans. After this visit I’ve to admit everything was much clearer. From the first Spanish (and French!) settlers until now, going through the Indian issues, the independence war against Mexico, the secession war,… everything was pretty well covered and explained. Definitely a must-see as a first contact with Texas!
Count 5$ for the parking (with 2$ rebate on the museum price), 5.5$ for the exhibits visit, there is also an IMAX theatre for 7$. You can eventually add 2$ for an audio tours of the museum. This is indeed a MP3 player where you enter the number of the spot you want a comment on. This is a great idea and usually a good way to visit something but in this case I wouldn’t recommend it, it doesn’t bring much more than what you can already read in the exhibits.
Open from 10am to 6pm (from noon on Sunday)

Approved in 1997 by the 75th Texas Legislature, The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum opened on April 21, 2001 at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and North Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, Texas.
This museum shows the history of Texas, one of the greatest nations on Earth!
I would highly recommend learning about Texas through this great medium!
