keep watered and in the shade! by carlrea When i visited Austin last August i was shocked to how hot it was. i was constantly thirsty. In England we might be lucky to get the odd day of 85 degrees but in Austin it was always mid to high 90's and to me it seemed a lot hotter. Just common sense really drink plenty of fluids and dont spend to long out in the midday sun!! Leave a Comment

by nomorewars Like I stated in my introduction, Austin is unlike any other city in the State of Texas. Driving through the city, one would think that it has a homeless epidemic. Although there is a large homeless population, no one honestly feels as though it is a problem. As a matter of fact, Austin has embraced their homeless population & treats those individuals as though they are an individual community. I guess in a sense they are, but the meaning in Austin far exceeds that of a statistic. Although you will see a homeless person standing at an intersection with a sign asking for money, you will not observe a homeless person harassing tourists in a park or anywhere else in the city. Furthermore, unlike other major U.S. cities, you will not see the homeless of Austin confined or restricted to one particular area-but they do have their own individual preferences. During my recent visit to Austin, the homeless were rather handy to me in regards to directions, local history, & the whereabouts of good restaurants. One of the more interesting encounters that I witnessed occurred during my first trip to Austin. On this particular day a couple of tourists were standing in the middle of Congress Avenue, looking quite bewildered. When a homeless man approached them offering assistance, the tourists rudely dismissed the fellow, waving him off as if he was hired help. Well, this didn’t sit too well with a group of Austinites who immediately charged the tourists, berating them as they fled for safety. Leave a Comment

Leslie Cochran by ATXtraveler Austin continues to hold true to its saying: "Keep Austin Weird" by supporting Leslie Cochran, one of our less esteemed members of the Austin community. Leslie is a transvestite that calls 6th St. home. Completely harmless, he has been rumored to actually be educated at UT, where he once was a professor and local citizen extraordinaire... at least that is the way he tells it. Last election year, he actually ran for Mayor... and came in SECOND! Thanks to AustinExperience.com for the photo Leave a Comment

Coming from California, I found it odd that on Texas Highways designated "Rest Areas" are different then "Picnic Areas." No doubt both have inviting benches and paths for weary travelers to rest thier tired bodies, and are frequently seen at 40 to 80m intervals. But don't be fooled, those people walking in form the toolies in the Picnic Areas are on a different kind of nature hike. That's right, there are NO restrooms, much less a place to wash ones hands before eating at Picnic Areas. Such refinement as a toilet are left to Rest Areas only. Rest Areas where everything is left to air dry, if you know what I mean....... Leave a Comment

Waller Creek by ATXtraveler One of the key features of Austin is all of its beautiful greenbelts and hike/bike trails. I will warn you however that there is alot of construction going on in Waller Creek at this time. Right by the convention center is actually closed off right now for rennovation, so make sure you check in with the City of Austin website prior to going on a walk throughout Austin! Enjoy your trip! I-35 in Downtown Austin by kd_baby Downtown Austin is #1. It can claim to be the busiest stretch of I-35 in the entire US. Just like you shouldn't buy a car (from a financial standpoint), you shouldn't travel on I-35 in Downtown Austin. Obviously, from a practical standpoint, you need a car (in Texas) and you need to travel on I-35 through the downtown area. Here are my suggestions for the best times *not* to use I-35: 1) Early morning rush hour 2) Afternoon rush hour 3) Whenever there's a UT football game 4) Whenever anything major is happening downtown Leave a Comment

by stappm Beware of vehicles with California license plates, they will be being pulled over shortly. For random and various inspections, not limited to alien transportaion, LOL! I'm serious. I was pulled over 5 times driving through Texas - we finally stopped and bought an "I love texas" window stat (so it could easily be removed), and the flashing lights disappeared as mysteriously as they came. I CAN'T WAIT TO TURN 25!! CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE. by HerbstCasual As a friend of mine aptly put it before leaving Austin in disgust, "Austin is a great retirement community for young people." This picture, for example, shows a 23 year old man after living in Austin for only six months. Seriously, if you adore playing playing hacky-sack, smoking bowls of Herb, and talking endlessly about how unique your dog is, you will absolutely love it here. If you have any lifetime goals (and, no, I'm not talking about fame, fortune or conspicuous consumption here) but artistic, philosophical or altruistic goals...well...buyer beware.. Austin is a plastic carrot filled with Twinky frosting. Why don't I leave? One problem: I no longer know who I am, where to go, or what to do. Guess I'll just smoke a bowl, go outside and play hacky-sack with my dog. Leave a Comment

Ragweed by kd_baby If you have allergies, then you're going to hate Austin. The Spring in Austin tends to provide high counts of pollen and mold, and (if you're lucky) you get a stuffy nose for a least a week. Leave a Comment

Some of the rougher parts of Austin include, and in no particular of danger: 1) Montopolis Dr. (a.k.a. M-Town) 2) Dove Springs 3) The East Side (11th-12th St. to Airport Blvd.) 4) 6th-7th St. on the weekends You need streetsmarts for these areas, and if you travel at night, plenty of friends. I've never had a problem, but have heard numerous stories. Be careful, cautious, and alert. Leave a Comment
