Bastrop Things to Do

About the only thing even remotely amusing to do in Bastrop is this unique walkway. It's nothing extraordinary by any means, but this walk does have a serene quality to it as it meanders along the lazy Colorado River below old businesses and under a metal frame bridge. A good number of tree specimens are identified by placards, and there is a group of resident ducks near the boat dock that can be fun to while away the time watching. In doing so, you'll fit right in with the pace of life here (slow) and be happy that you don't have to wake up every day in this depressing locality.

Bastrop Restaurants

This restaurant may be part of a chain, but I think it deserves special recognition here nonetheless. It's one of two restaurants (the other being El Nuevo mexican restaurant [or something like that]), that I would really even consider going to in Bastrop. Both restaurants have filling and tasteful Mexican entrees, but what I like especially about Guadalajara's is its buffet. If you like skirt steak or charro beans, this is the ticket! And they have raw shrimp and sopapillas to boot, all for like $7.99 on weekdays.

Favorite Dish: the skirt steak (at least, I think that is what it is called) on the buffet...i'm addicted to it!

Bastrop Tourist Traps

Okay, so maybe I'm being a bit nitpicky, but there is nothing at these state parks (unless you want to go swimming, camping, or golfing) that you won't be able to appreciate from highways 21 or 71 going east of Bastrop. I mean, it's cool that the state decided to set aside some land in "The Lost Pines" for preservation, but the hiking trails offer very little in the way of scenery (just an unchanging view of pine trees or, even worse, a clearcut area with electrical lines stretching away into the distance), and the two bodies of water located at these sites kind of just seem like big mudholes. In my opinion, the entertainment of travelling up and down the hills on highways 21 or 71 east of Bastrop is much more of a thrill than these places.

Unique Suggestions: find a good book or hammock maybe to make the time pass

Fun Alternatives: I've heard that McKinney Roughs Nature Park (off highway 71 west of Bastrop) is actually a good place for hiking and nature study, with many carefully developed trails and other features. That is where I would go for some outdoor fun. That notwithstanding, you're better off finding enrichment to your life somewhere other than Bastrop.
