The city has experienced a sudden boom, but it stopped shortly, as most of the oil business has moved to Houston. This has frozen the downtown as if it is 1930, and you can see a lot of interesting art deco buildings. Downtown also has an art museum, a concert hall and a firefighters' museum. There are 2 main beaches in the greater Beaumont area. Crystal Beache is a major party destination for locals and is patrolled heavily by cops. There are ferries from Crystal Beach to Galveston. This is a much easier way to get to Galveston from Beaumont rather than going through Houston. The other beach is Sea Rim State Park which is about 35 minutes south of Beaumont. Directions: About an hour Southwest from Beaumont.

About 5 minutes East of Beaumont in Vidor is Boomtown Lake. There's a small charge for the day which is probably around $5. Beaumont gets rather hot in the summer, and swimming is a must for everybody that lives here.
