    Officers houses, Fort Davis, Texas

Fort Davis is a XIXth century fort built to defend american expansion to the West against Indians (Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas) and Mexicans. It was located on one of the major roads of the time, the San Antonio-El-Paso. Military infantry and cavalry men were posted for several years in this remote location. Some of them were "buffalo soldiers", i.e. african-americans.
Most buildings date from the 1860ies. A few contain exhibitions illustrating the lifes of the soldiers of the time, and the history of the region. It is extremely interesting! Imagine the hardship of living there in the middle of nowhere at the time! Plus, the setting of the Fort is beautiful, right against a cliff made of old lava flows. Finally these buildings look really nice and quaint.

It costs $3 per person (pass valid for 7 days). Open every day 8 am to 5 pm.
