    Mules Ears, Big Bend NP

You can see on the picture why these two peaks got that name! There is a wonderful view from the Mules Ears Overlook, along Maxwell Drive.
There are many trails around the Mule Ears area, and I plan to explore some next time I go!!

As you drive the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive you will find a short road that leads to the Mule Ears Viewpoint. You can simply make a quick stop here to look at the formation, or you can hike the 3.8 mile trail which leads through the desert to a small spring. The trail is a primitive route rated as medium difficulty. At the spring you will find a rock corral and a small adobe house. Do not attempt this hike during heavy rains as it crosses several arroyos as well as follows a wash, so flooding can be dangerous.

    The Mule Ears

Another interesting formation in the park is called "The Mule Ears". It is a bit of a drive to this viewpoint. This also serves as the trailhead for the trail leading to Mule Ears Spring (which I did not take).
