A wonderful little zoo that is a treasure to the community. It is inexpensive too. Only $7.00 for adults and $3.75 for children.

Brownsville Restaurants

  • Excellent Tex-Mex Restaurant

This place isn't fancy, but is one of the best local restaurants, and very inexpensive. It is as close to home-made as you can get. For lunch they have a regular list of some 15 plates. All are served with a bowl of soup, and a small dessert- coconut cake or vanilla flan- all for under $10!Not a lot of English is spoken by the staff, but they...

  • Get the double meat!

Best fast food burger in the world! I know, I have had a bunch of them. Double meat Whataburger. No cheese. Meat, mustard, dill pickles and sliced jalapeno peppers set off the lettuce, onion, and tomato. The bun is grilled and the patties are juicy. I am getting hungry just writing about it!

A great place to eat on South Padre is at South Padre Island Brewery. The price is reasonable and they have a decent menu to choose from. You can go up to the second floor and sit outside on the deck. You get a great view of the Island and the weather is usually always great in the summer. (They have an elevator as well) Aside from there great...

Brownsville Tourist Traps

  • by eablack Written Aug 25, 2002

Beggers on the street that are not from out of town and pretend they are and ask you for money. Especially the one's in wheel chairs. One guy in particular that hangs around the college area at UTB/TSC that claims he has 6 kids and can't get his car to start to go back to Wisconsin. This is not true I check it out and he lives in Matamoros but begs here in Brownsville, Texas for money and I felt sorry for him and gave him $20.00. Scammer.

South Padre Island, certainly a hot spot to travel, no matter what time of year. Away from the area, miss being with the one I love.

For me, the best place on South Padre is Kelly's Irish Pub. It is a local bar, but it has that small island atmosphere with great pub grub and very reasonable priced pints (Guinness that is).The thing to do is rent some kind of buggy, there are many places to choose from, and cruise up and down the island. At the beach you can do all the normal...

Steeped in the heritage of the Rio Grande delta, Brownsville is a perfect travel destination with Mexico at the doorstep and Gulf of Mexico beaches close by. Unhurried southwestern charm plus a unique bicultural mystique amidst Texas’ best overall climate creates a great setting for a two-nation vacation.Brownsville is accessible by air with...
