  • The Murals and Other Art

There are examples of local art all around; just keep your eyes open.

  • Gladys Porter Zoo

Now this zoo kinda impressed me especially for the low price. You walk down a 3/4 mile paved walkway (that is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers) and see over 1500 animals representing over 360 species in attractive, natural looking (well mostly) enclosures. The zoo is divided into sections like Tropical America (love the Galapagos Tortoises...

  • Another Nice Chain Restaurant

$12 as of May 2014. Cheddar's is a chain restaurant similar to say Chili's. The atmosphere is nice but still rather casual. The food is consistently good and the service professional. I had a very good waitress at this one. Hours are 11 AM to 11 PM Monday through Thursday, 11 AM to 12 AM Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 AM to 11 PM on Sunday. They...

  • Excellent Tex-Mex Restaurant

This place isn't fancy, but is one of the best local restaurants, and very inexpensive. It is as close to home-made as you can get. For lunch they have a regular list of some 15 plates. All are served with a bowl of soup, and a small dessert- coconut cake or vanilla flan- all for under $10!Not a lot of English is spoken by the staff, but they...

A great place to eat on South Padre is at South Padre Island Brewery. The price is reasonable and they have a decent menu to choose from. You can go up to the second floor and sit outside on the deck. You get a great view of the Island and the weather is usually always great in the summer. (They have an elevator as well) Aside from there great...

Brownsville Tourist Traps

  • by eablack Written Aug 25, 2002

Beggers on the street that are not from out of town and pretend they are and ask you for money. Especially the one's in wheel chairs. One guy in particular that hangs around the college area at UTB/TSC that claims he has 6 kids and can't get his car to start to go back to Wisconsin. This is not true I check it out and he lives in Matamoros but begs here in Brownsville, Texas for money and I felt sorry for him and gave him $20.00. Scammer.

For me, the best place on South Padre is Kelly's Irish Pub. It is a local bar, but it has that small island atmosphere with great pub grub and very reasonable priced pints (Guinness that is).The thing to do is rent some kind of buggy, there are many places to choose from, and cruise up and down the island. At the beach you can do all the normal...
