Conroe Things to Do

  • Birth of the Lone Star Flag

Montgomery County has been designated as the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag as this mural shows. There is a park nearby dedicated to the different flags that have flown over Texas.

  • The Texian

Also in the Lonestar Monument & Historic Flag Park is one of my favorite statues; "The Texian". It honors the men who volunteered to fight in the Texas Revolution. Not just the ones who became famous in history like Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, Jim Bowie and Stephen F. Austin but the everyday man that left his family, farm or ranch to fight for...

  • Lone Star Monument & Flag Park

Another nice historical and educational attraction in Conroe is the Lone Star Monument & Historical Flag Park. This impressive park shows the many flags that are associated with aspects of the settlement and establishment of the Republic of Texas and the state. Three of my favorites are the Lone Star Flag that is the Texas state flag and was...

  • Veterans Memorials

There are at least two veterans memorials located in Conroe. One is by the Conroe City Hall downtown and the other is next to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club by Candy Cane Park.

  • Founder's Plaza

Founder's Plaza is another park in downtown Conroe. This one has a small stage, a picnic area, a fountain and small sculptures honoring the founders of the town and other contributors to the town's history and culture. Interesting place to walk through.

  • Crighton Theater

The Crighton Theater was a vaudeville theater completed in 1934 in the center of downtown Conroe. I love the architecture of this theater. Today it is used for a variety of live performances like plays, concerts and other community activities.

  • Heritage Plaza

Heritage Plaza is a park in downtown Conroe where they hold community events, children's activities and free concerts on the first Thursday of the month. It was approaching Christmas when I was there so it was decorated with a Christmas Tree and other items. It is a nice spot of green amongst all the concrete. Gazebo, pavilion, play area for kids...

  • Candy Cane Park

Located next to the interstate in Conroe, Texas is a 24 acre park with lots of trees and grass for the kids to play amongst, a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, a 3/8 mile jogging track, picnic areas and an aquatic center nearby. Good place to stop so the kids can run off some energy and the adults can stretch their legs.

  • Montgomery County Heritage Museum

Conroe is also home to a nice little museum called the Monroe County Heritage Museum. This museum has some interesting and informative displays about the oil, natural gas, and agriculture which fueled the growth of the town and the county. The museum is housed in the Grogan/ Cochran Home built in 1924. Hours are 9 AM to 4 PM Wednesday through...

  • Conroe City Hall

Admittedly, the Conroe City Hall is not that old but it is kind of pretty and they have a small green area that is nicely landscaped. There is a veterans memorial here too.
