Favorite thing:
Dallas is a huge sports town. The Dallas Burn is a new major league soccer team. The Dallas Cowboys , the Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Dallas Sidekicks, Dallas Desparados and the Dallas Stars are some of the professional teams in Dallas.
There are 4 local college teams (SMU, TCU, UTA, and North Texas). Local high schools also have their fans, and there are T-ball through player pitch little league and other recreational sports leagues both for children and adults.
Several area Olympic athletes participated in Athens in 2004, including Khadevis Robinson - Track and Field, Dana Vollmer - Swimming, Jeremy Wariner - Track and Field and Carly Patterson - Gymnastics
The Dallas area hosts two PGA events, and the Texas Motor Speedway is also in the vicinity
Favorite thing:
I always wondered where Dallas got its name. I somewhat associated it with the old radio soap "Stella Dallas" (which apparently was also a novel and a movie). But that was obviously wrong.
According to the Political Graveyard website, the name of Dallas came from George Mifflin Dallas (1792-1864) -- also known as George M. Dallas -- of Pennsylvania. In addition to the city of Dallas Texas, there are counties in Ark., Iowa, and Mo. named for him.
He was the son of Alexander James Dallas. Born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa., July 10, 1792. He was a Democrat and a lawyer who had a political career including being mayor of Philadelphia, Pa., 1829; U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, 1829-31; U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, 1831-33; Pennsylvania state attorney general, 1833-35; U.S. Minister to Russia, 1837-39; Great Britain, 1856-61.
The significant office that he held was Vice President of the United States, 1845-49 under James Polk.
He died in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa., December 31, 1864. Interment at St. Peter's Churchyard, Philadelphia, Pa.
This seems pretty far removed from Dallas TX.
Fondest memory:
It's a bit ironic that another Vice President who was actually FROM Texas was catapulted into the Presidency by an assassin's bullet that was fired in Dallas.
Favorite thing: On average, Dallas is more windy than Chicago - 'The Windy City.' Chicago's annualized average wind speed is 10.4 mph. Dallas averages 10.7 mph for the full year, and has higher wind speed averages in eight of the 12 calendar months.
Favorite thing:
If you visit Dallas from outside the United States or (or even from far away within the US), remember we are not all cowboys. Dallas is a friendly and interesting place to visit, and there ARE lots of western things to see and do. But I am more proud of our southern hospitality and friendliness than all the western and cowboy "stuff".
Enjoy your visit and remember that we have wonderful museums, theaters, and some of the best restuarants in the US.
Favorite thing:
Texas is full of wildflowers and bluebonnets (my favortie) and they bloom in April.
People take their children to the fields to take pictures in the bluebonnet fields.
Favorite thing: Come and see my travelouge to know how is a PICNIC AT DALLAS TEXAS
Favorite thing: It is beautiful driving into Dallas and seeing the skyline from a distance. It is more amazing once you get there and see all the great things too do!
Favorite thing: One can enjoy the many parks in Dallas whether you prefer to do that with friends, husband/wife, or just byyourself. You will enjoy your time!
