Texas laws concerning the selling of alcoholic beverages allow each locality to determine for itself if the sale will be permitted. And by locality the law means that each precinct (a tiny political subdivision) determines this for itself.
The result is that you can cross the street in Dallas and find you have entered a "dry" precinct where alcohol sales are prohibitted.
The solution for this nonsense is for drinking or eating establishments which wish to sell alcohol in a "dry" area to constitute themselves as a "private club."
So don't be surprised if you are asked by your bartender or waitress if you are a "member" when you place your drink order.
No worry though because if you're not you'll discover that the membership requirements are rather lax. Indeed, if you're over 21 and and maintaining homeostasis you've met the requirements and membership is generally free and can be conferred immediately.
Most such "private clubs" use a service called Unicard which maintains the records which the law requires concerning club membership. Your server will take your name, address and birthdate and issue you a temporary membership card that is good in all establishments which are part of the Unicard system.
Wherever you go, whatever you do, sampling the local beer is definite must.
What do the locals drink, what beer is most popular, which beer is hardest to find, does it come in a half pint glass just like grandma used to drink…or better still, a full pint glass like I drink??? These are all good questions that need to be answered...
And in Texas, forget about all the Budweisers and Lite Beers from Miller, DRINK SHINER BOCK....

Fondest memory: Living in Texas is like watching evolution take place. Darwinism is always being tested... Several of my friends and I thumbed our nose at Charles Darwin one evening. At the time, I was living on the 7th floor of an old department store that had been converted into lofts in downtown Dallas. After many Shiners, my roommate decided that everyone was hungry and needed to experience his mother’s secret salsa recipe. So, Damian starts frying up peppers in a pan and blending tomatoes in a mixer. The next we know, a toxic gas from the frying peppers fills the flat and nobody can breathe. Eyes burning and throats choking, we opened up our windows and climbed out on to the two-foot wide ledge over looking the streets of downtown Dallas...probably not the most intelligent thing to do given our drunken mind-altered state. For the record, Damian never left the kitchen and nobody liked his Salsa...
Favorite thing: A photo of Planet Hollywood, a restaurant chain which houses Hollywood memorabilia. For example, the motorcycle used in the Arnold Swarzenager movie 'Terminator 2', a jumpsuit worn by Elvis Presley and similiar items.
Get some real Texas barbeque ... drink Shiner Bock beer ... go honky tonkin ... visit the museums ... go shopping ... marvel at the sky scrapers ... take in everything you can and enjoy some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.
Fondest memory: So many it's hard to put them all down, but here goes: First and foremost would be my wedding two years ago ... a perfect and magical day. Then there was the time we went bar hopping in a limo and ended up at the after-hours club called 121. On another trip we hit every joint in West End and have little memory of the ride home (though I do remember dancing with an Elvis impersonator at Dallas Alley!). Spending the day at the zoo with my family. Picking out wedding cakes with my brother-in-law. Playing in the yard with my niece. My sister's glorious wedding out near Little Elm. This list could go on an on.
Other than Shiner Bock, Dallas is big on Tequila too. You are never too far from a Margarita in Dallas...
