    SMU (Southern Methodist University)

by keeweechic Updated Mar 6, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The university was founded in 1911 by the United Methodist Church (as it is known now). It has to be one of the most impressive campus’ I have seen. The initial entrance is heavily tree lined with fabulous buildings either side. SMU as is it known, consistently ranks in the top half of national universities in the ‘America’s Best Colleges’ guide.

The university takes up more than 600 acres and is managed by a Board of Trustees that includes civic, business, education, and religious leaders who represent various faiths and geographic areas

This school was founded in 1925 (under SMU School of Law) and ranks in the top tier of law schools, according to U.S. News and World Report. It was one of the first schools to sponsor legal clinics. Just one of the many impressive buildings on the SMU campus.

The building as it is now, was redesigned by renowned architect Cesar Pelli and his Associates. They updated the Bob Hope Theatre, Caruth Auditorium, and O'Donnell Recital/Lecture Hall and added a dance wing amongst other extensive changes to the Arts building.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Perkins Chapel was built in the 1950’s originally for the worship needs of Protestants. In the lat 1990’s the Perkins-Prothro family consulted with the Catholic campus ministry and donated funds for a complete renovation. The renovated Perkins Chapel has come to unite both Protestants and Catholics at SMU. The chapel has earned a Preservation Dallas Achievement Award winner for the restoration.
