Colourful and Eclectic
Deep Ellum has been often described as a 'little New Orleans and Southern SoHo' - It is trendy and zaney and very unique. The shops you will see there are even decorated in a very colourful manner.
This is the place for pyschic's, tattoo shops as well as individual nightlife and restaurants. Deep Ellum is the modern eclectic side of Dallas.
If you follow Elm Street east from downtown Dallas you will run into Deep Ellum. This is an entertainment and arts district of Dallas. The area was originally called Deep Elm but because early residents pronunciation sounded more like Deep Ellum and it seemed to stick. In 1883 Robert Munger invented a new cotton gin and built his first factory in Deep Ellum in 1884.
Henry Ford in 1912, also opened one of his regional assembly plants for his Model T's in Deep Ellum. The first commercial building built for and by blacks in Dallas was in Deep Ellum.
By the 1920s the area had developed into a retail and entertainment centre for residents of Dallas but primarily African Americans ones. So there was quite come background to this inner district of Dallas.
