For Your Consideration, Dallas
When we took the city tour in 1997 we couldn't visit this site because it was Monday and it was closed. In addition to Old City Park, the following are some of the museums in Dallas that are normally closed on Monday.
African American Museum in Fair Park
Age of Steam Railroad Museum at Fair Park (also Tues)
Bath House Cultural Center
Biblical Arts Center
Crow Collection of Asian Art in the Arts District
Dallas Historical Society's Hall of State
Dallas Museum of Art
Ice House Cultural Center
The MAC ( McKinney Ave. Contemporary )
Nasher Sculpture Center
The Women's Museum in Fair Park
Other area museums closed on Monday
American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum, Fort Worth
Amon Carter Museum (Fort Worth)
Arlington Museum of Art
The Art Center, Nacodoches
ArtCentre of Plano
Fielder House Museum (Arlington)
Imagisphere Children's Museum, Bedford
Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth)
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art (Fort Worth)
Some museums are NOT closed on Monday - the 6th floor museum, the Aquarium (although there is no shark feeding on Monday) and the Natural History Museums are open Mondays.
In Dallas I was constantly asked for money. Sometimes it was quite intimidating. People come and give you information and directions whether you want it or not and then ask to be paid for it! A few times we were made to feel guilty with a sob story. We were sometimes followed when we ignored people asking for money and ended up giving them some just to get rid of them! I have travelled the states extensively and Dallas is the only place I have encountered this to this extent.
Lots of travellers like to jive with the locals at night...having worked in the Dallas night club scene for over a decade, I feel the need to pass on some important info to our international visitors. Because of our issues here with alcohol related accidents and fatalities, law enforcement is coming down hard. They CAN and sometimes will arrest someone who appears to be intoxicated in public. You can be arrested for public intoxication when walking home from a bar, going to your car for a pack of smokes, or other seemingly harmless things, if they think you've had too much to drink. You can be arrested for giving a drink to someone who is under 21, knowingly or not. Just giving y'all a heads up on whats happening in the here and now. Feel free to party but make specific plans for safe transportation (cab or designated driver). Concerning women, do NOT EVER leave a drink unattended or accept a drink from someone unless you are present while it is being served. There have been cases of reported drugging. Some may say this is all common sense, but my Dad thought changing the oil was common sense until he found out that I drove my first car 11,000 miles before we discussed it! Please be safe and your stay will be much more fun! =)
The Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art will allow still photography as long as it is for private, non-commercial use only. No flash photography is allowed. However for their special exhibitions, no photography is allowed.
From March 2003, Dallas will have in place a ban on smoking in public places, including restaurants, hospitals, schools, theatres, libraries, museums and transit system vehicles.
The ban excludes smoking in bars, tobacco shops and pool halls, which have to provide designated smoking and non-smoking areas.
DFW has a shiny new Rental Car Facility and renting cars here while efficient is extremely expensive. In most cases you will save considerable money by taking a taxi to an off-site location to rent a car.
If cost is a factor for your trip, consider checking off site rental locations and compare with the airport prices.
Still to this day dallas is a very segerated CITY, and thats a SHAME.. YOU GOT THE ALL WHITE neiborhoods the all black neiborhoods and the all latino hoods.. that how dallas is.. a white man cant even visit most black neiborhoods becuae they dont wont him there no more. Dallas has school which are all black or all white or sometimes black and latino. even the churches we cant even all attend its seperated up too. you got the cops always harrassing the black and latinos.. BLACK PEOPLE IN DALLAS CANT EVEN WALK TEN BLOCKS WITHOUT BEING STOPPED BY THE POLICE. THATS JUST BAD FOR THE CITY.
Taxis are plentiful but it's almost impossible to hail one. Call for dispatch or look for a hotel cab stand. In the outer areas of the city, you hardly ever see any, except at the airport of course.
You'd be surprised by all the variety of clubs that are available to experience. There is a rocket club..some of these rockets are so big you need to clearance from NASA prior to launching. As you can see my wee baby rocket is nowhere near that. I went down to the local hobby shop and bought a simple Estes rocket. I modified it to fit my likin and even named it....'Daisy'. UTD in Richardson is my favorite place to launch rockets. There is plenty of space and you can actually get your rocket back...that is of course the best part...launching the heck out of it and then chasing after it.. Sadly though...my leedle Daisy got away. I was a droopy leedle gal after that. Pouty lip & all.
Consider this more like advice than a warning. I've noticed during my travels in the US that many museums and attractions are closed on Mondays. They stay open on weekends when people are off from work and then are closed on Mondays. May I suggest when you travel to Dallas or to almost any major city that you use Monday as a day for travelling then start seeing the sights on Tuesday.
