Don Joses Mexican Restaurant: Mexican in Ennis

by VeronicaG Updated Jun 4, 2008

    Don Joses

While in the historic district we inquired as to the best place to eat dinner later in the day. Don Joses Mexican Restaurant was highly recommended by one of the shop keepers at La Galleria. We shuffled up the sidewalk about another block and found Don Joses.

The restaurant is fronted by a very inviting bricked patio area, where dining tables are topped with bright red umbrellas. It looked like an inviting place to eat, but we decided to have dinner at another restaurant recommended by Texas Monthly magazine (earlier tip). If we return to Ennis, I'd want to try Don Joses next time!

Don Joses would have been an ideal location for 'people-watching' since the festival was in high gear and folks were wandering all over the town.

BUBBA'S BBQ: A Texas Monthly Top Pick For BBQ

BBQ's are a popular stop in Texas! Bubba's BBQ, in particular, was mentioned in a recent article in the Texas Monthly Magazine (June '08), listing the top BBQ's in the state (pics 2 & 3).

While traveling between polka halls, we spied the restaurant's lofty sign along the highway. Jim veered into the lot and we exited our vehicle in anticipation of a delicious repast.

I ordered pork ribs*, which came with two side dishes (pic #1). I selected green beans with boiled potato and a sweet cole slaw ($7.99) with ice tea for my beverage. Jim preferred turkey, which appeared to be moist and flavorful. We split a creamy coconut cream pie ($3.23).

*The ribs were tender and tasty, but surprisingly I didn't detect a sauce or marinade. Perhaps it was absorbed, but I usually prefer a sweet, smoky BBQ sauce.

La Galleria: French Bakery and Bistro

by VeronicaG Updated Jun 2, 2008

    La Galleria

One of the disappointments of our trip to Ennis was missing the opportunity to have lunch at La Galleria, a lovely little restaurant in the historic district. A special event was being catered, so they were closing as we arrived.

However, I was still able to snap a picture of this pleasant French Bistro and Bakery housed in a 101 year old renovated building. A gallery on the upper level displayed Thomas Kincade (known as 'the painter of light') paintings, while a home decor area filled the remaining sections. A few antiques were also available.

After a short chat with one of the managers who gave us some inside information on the Polka Festival, we continued on our way. Most of the shops had closed by this time, although it seemed early to do so...but it was a Saturday afternoon.

The Southern Style Bar and Grill is located in the historic National Bank Building. They serve Cajun food and it seems plenty of crawfish. Beer is free Friday and Saturdays.

The Cafe Moravia serves authentic homemade Czech cuisine. There is fresh baked kolache (fruit and cheese pastries), apple strudel, klobase (Czech sausage), sauerkraut, and knedliky (bread dumplings) to choose from. They also serve Czech beer and wine. They are situated inside the Czech Heritage Shoppe

The English tearoom is in the Downtown Emporium building. It is the centrepoint of all the little shops within the building. They serve sandwiches, delicious cakes and tea and coffee.

Capuzano’s is just off the freeway. They serve fine Mexican food. It was newly opened and I can’t remember what I had but I remember the food was very good here.
