Update: Over Memorial Day we had the opportunity to enjoy Riata's rooftop dining area. It was a pleasant day for looking out over the city as we sat four stories above the street. (I've included new pictures).
Our first occasion to visit Sundance Square wason a late Sunday morning for brunch. REATA had an OLD WEST look to it, which made it seem so enticing.
The menu gave a short history of the establishment, so we learned that Reata is named after the Little Reata Ranch from the movie, GIANT.
Its owners carried a Western theme throughout the restaurant, which gave it an authentic flavor. Although the dining room has Buffalo and Longhorn Steer trophies mounted on the walls, you'll also find beautifully ornamented saddles and chaps displayed as artwork.
A large cowboy mural greets you in the lobby, while a statue of James Dean (as a character from the above-mentioned movie) lurks near the restrooms. Yes, the decor is Old West, but it is decidedly upscale.
I ordered apple-cinnamon French toast with bacon, which was a scrumptious mouthful. The apples were nicely warmed and syrupy; the bacon crisp and oh-so-good! Our waiter, Chad, was prompt and courteous. We discovered that he was a former marine who had once been stationed at the DMZ in S. Korea.
To make our visit even more enjoyable, a guitarist entertained in soothing tunes as we enjoyed our meal. We'd definitely return to REATA.
UPDATE: Since this original tip, we've come to Reata many times and have always had a superb meal! Our favorite time to visit is in mild weather when we can take advantage of the roof top dining area with a view of Sundance Square.
Favorite Dish: Delicious brunch; upscale Western decor
Not quite the views from the previous home on the 35th floor of the Bank One Building but still a very pleasant setting overlooking Sundance Square. Reata Restaurant has dining both in the basement, ground floor and on the roof. The rooftop dining patio and outdoor bar boast having 150 tequilas– the largest single selection in the Fort Worth-Dallas area.This cowboy shrub is in need of a haircut but is clearly visible from the street, sitting on the edge of the roof top of Reata’s.
Reata’s Restaurant used to be on the 35th floor of the old Bank One Building (which is currently undergoing restoration and has been renamed) which was severely damaged in the tornedo which hit Fort Worth in 2000. It is now located at the old ‘Caravan of Dreams’ in Sundance Square. With ‘high class’ cowboy cuisine the décor is burnished copper, wood, leather wrought iron and rustic paintings. The beaten copper trim in the Library bar has been salvaged from the damaged Tower. The main level is decorated with vintage boots and saddles and the large wooden doors in the dining room have been taken from the set of TV series ‘Bonanza’.
Open: Mon-Sun 11 am-10:30 pm for lunch and dinner
Favorite Dish: Some of the featured dishes (which changes regularly) are : Bacon and Cheddar Rissotto, Gulf Coast Shrimp Gazpacho, Jalapeno and Cilantro Soup, Sour Cream and Chive Potato Salad, Chocolate Chunk Bread Pudding and Cool Cantaloupe Ice cream. The Vaquero Sampler is all Tex-Mex (one tamale, one enchilada, and one stuffed chile relleno).
We walked out of the Embassy Suites one night with the sole purpose of finding a steakhouse. We wandered around and checked a few menus at some nearby restaurants before seeing a pretty big crowd in the windows of Reata. We didn't even check the menu before finding the front door and requesting a table. Once we were seated I was pleased by the friendly waitress who was happy to spend several minutes explaining the specials and the best items on the menu, though once she did stumble and say "Oh, crap, I forgot," as she grabbed a menu to refresh her memory.
I ordered the Blackened "Buffalo" rib eye with Cook's Butter. No, it wasn't served fried and spicy, Buffalo style, it was actually a steak made from bison, often called buffalo. I ordered it cooked medium rare and served with asparagus rather than green beans. When it arrived, I was very impressed... the meat was excellent and tender. The side dishes, mashed potatoes, and asparagus were also great. The rib eye was a bit expensive at $32, but it was excellent. Shiner Bock beers were $4.50.
This huge, 20,000 square foot restaurant is located right on Sundance Square, and it has four floors of bars and seating. They also have second location in Alpine, Texas.
Reata is the premier restaurant in Tarrant county, the Fort Worth side of Dallas/Fort Worth. They serve Texas cuisine, which includes "Texas" size portions of chicken fried steak, grilled buffalo, steaks, field greens with goat cheese, baked salmon, and their signature tamales. Their desserts include creme brulee, flourless chocolate cake, chocolate & ice cream tacos, strawberries with creme fresh, and root beer floats with microbrewed rootbeer.
It is our favorite restaurant in Dallas/Fort Worth. Prices run between $12 - $35. You can get a small salad for $7, fantastic chicken tortilla soup for around $6, a chicken fried steak that can easily feed two people for $13, 4 large tamales that will fill up any guy for $8, and all kinds of steaks and fish.
The atmosphere is absolutely mind boggling. The basement & 1st floor are a classy cowboy theme. The rooftop (3rd floor) is open air with fans in the summer and heaters in the winter. They have a private cave for groups of 8 or more. And they have an enclosed glass topped room on the roof if you want airconditioning. Drink prices are steep, but other wise this is the best food you can get in Fort Worth.
And the best part is you will see high-dollar cowboys in their wrangler jeans & cowboy hats all the way up to wedding parties in tuxedos and formal wear. Just don't show up in shorts or raggedy jeans. You can dress classy or casual and fit in. After all, this is Fort Worth. We aren't snobby Dallas folk. Just dress presentable and clean. And relax in this fantastic restaurant. Makes reservations for Friday and Saturday nights. If you don't, you can simply eat at one of the small bistro tables in the bar area.
Favorite Dish: The tamales are their signature dish. Even though they are on the appetizer menu, many people simply order the tamales as their main course. At $8, you can't go wrong, and they are like no other tamale you will have ever eaten.
Their tortilla soup is spicy and full of flavor. If you can't handle the spice, simply ask them to leave the bit of jalapenos out.
And you have to try the calf fries in their spicy dressing. Calf fries are bull testicles to all you non-Texans. You'd be surprised at how tasty they are.
Reata!!! Unfortunately, the tornado of 2000 forced this fine restaurant to close by severely damaging the Bank One building downtown. Good news, however, in that Reata is scheduled to reopen in a new location soon.
Reata has an interior like a ranch house with cow hide upholstery on the chairs and lots of cowboy items for decorations. It has a very casual and comfortable atmosphere.
Favorite Dish: Steak!!!! Talk about a deliciously seasoned piece of meat...cooked exactly the way you desire! Asparagus and buttered garlic mashed potatoes compliment your steak very well. Of course, a nice glass or two of Merlot or Pinot Noir go great with this meal!
