Modern Art Museum: A Special Exhibit at The Modern Art Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This exhibit featuring Ron Mueck's amazing realistic sculptures had been promoted for weeks. Jim and I visited Fort Worth's Modern Art Museum to see his thought provoking pieces on the very last weekend of the exhibit. We were so glad we did!

The Seated Woman (1999) was one of my favorite works by this fantastic artist. Fortunately, it is part of the permanent collection at the museum. It looks more like a photograph, rather than a creation of silicone, acrylic, polyurethane foam and fabric measuring about two feet tall. Notice her time worn face and delicately executed hands...and alligator shoes!

Picture #2 shows a sculpture titled Two Women, which measured around two feet tall. They are standing on a street corner gossiping--I found them immensely intriguing. Were they talking about us as we gawked and commented on the pieces? One expected them to move at any moment or succumb to a twitch or two!

Fort Worth's Museum of Art is a sleek aluminum and glass building designed by Tadao Ando, comprising over 50,000 square feet of exhibit area. It was constructed in 2002 with a gallery space which has been compared to New York's Museum of Modern Art (pictures 1 & 2).

Within the building, vast windows allow sunlight to play throughout the corridors. Concrete walls provide a neutral backdrop for the art. Outdoors, a wide swath of green grass surrounds most of the building, with a few sculptures giving added focus to the grounds.

We enjoy rambling through a museum's art garden! As Jim and I visited the sculptures outside, we discovered the following pieces:

picture #3 Reclining Woman by Henry Moore

picture #4 Vortex by Richard Serra

My favorite part of this museum is its reflecting pool, which seems to float the entire building if seen from the cafe. It was so restful sipping an ice tea on the cafe patio in this tranquil setting (picture 5).

Special events: The museum invites artist, scholars and critics to give lectures on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 7pm. First Fridays at the Modern offer live music and cocktails from 5pm-8pm. On this day, a docent-led tour is available beginning at 6:30 pm and open to museum members and Star-Telegram Press Pass holders.

Hours are Tues.-Sat. 10 am-5pm with extended hours on Tues. evenings Sept.-Nov. and Feb.-Apr. Sunday hours are 11am-5pm.

Admission is $10; $4 for students with ID and Seniors over age 60; free for ages 12 and under. There is no charge to visit the Grand Lobby, The Modern Shop* or the Cafe Modern.

Note: *The Modern Shop had some unique items which would make great gifts for upcoming birthdays or Christmas.

Modern Art Museum: First Fridays at the Modern Art Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metroplex has much to offer in the way of art culture and my husband and I have enjoyed several exhibits and special events at these museums in both Fort Worth and Dallas.

One such event is First Fridays at the Mod, which offers live music to the public once a month at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth*. You can enjoy the performance and also purchase a ticket to the art museum, which stays open later this particular evening. The music performance is offered 5:00 pm-8:00pm and is diverse in style. A jazz trio was performing on the night we visited, much to our delight!

Small tables and benches are scattered about the huge foyer for seating. Reservations for dinner can be made at the museum's restaurant, while wine or beverages can be ordered as the wait staff breezes by. Restaurant hours are 6:30 pm-8:30 pm.

A complimentary twenty minute docent led tour is available at 6:30 p.m. that evening for those who are Mod members or Star Telegram Press Pass holders. We didn't arrive in time for this, but we would definitely be interested in the tour on our next visit!

*Admission to First Friday at the Mod is $10 per person.

Stockyards Historic District: The Bull Ring
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walking past this place you may not take too much notice except for the enticement of ice cream or dessert advertised on the window. The name certainly gives no indication as to what can be found in this old historic saloon building in the stockyards. Inside there is the finest and largest privately owned collections of Texas art which has been put together by A.C. 'Ace' Cook who owned successful pawnshops until he became interested in Texas painters and their art. There is also many original early photographs from around Texas and many old advertising signs.

The art has been collected over about 30 years and in the 'Hockshop Collection'? there are more than 400 pieces - 70 of which are on the walls of The Bull Ring. Works include pieces such as May Schow's 'Mexican Girl' (1935), William Elliott's 'Workers Dallas' (1939), Dawson Dawson-Watson's 'Roses in the Hills' (1938), Olin Travis' 'Tom' (1937) and Frank P. Fisher Jr.'s 'Still Life with Green Grapes' (1939) and Douglas Chander's 'phonso Harrison' (1933). There are plenty of stories to go with the artwork as well.

While you are admiring the artwork you can order coffee, beer and sodas or Henry's homemade ice cream, smoothies, cheesecake or other desserts.

    Fort Worth Annual Art Fest
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first night of this year's Art Fest faced severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings, closing early at 7pm. The remaining days formed a picture-perfect weekend for this annual Fort Worth event.

Before any artwork is accepted it has to pass through a juried system, which explains why the participants and their offerings are top notch. We particularly appreciated these artists (!):

(picture 2) Glass Art by Bob Rynearson
(picture 3) Painting on Wood by Chip DuPont
(picture 4) Art Glass Jewelry by Vetro Caldo Designs

Live music filled the air, families held tight onto the hands of their little ones and a mix of all ages viewed booth after booth of creativity.

Food booths were available, but tickets had to be obtained first. Several of these ticket booths were stationed throughout the route--some with lengthy lines, but if one ventured further down the street there were shorter lines and less of a crowd. We nixed this and enjoyed a cold drink at Jamba Juice--one of several eateries in Sundance Square.

I can see us returning to this event again and again...it's just THAT good!

    Jazz by the Boulevard
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's no secret that my husband and I enjoy smooth or contemporary jazz, so when the 5th annual Jazz By The Boulevard was held on a September weekend, we were sure to be there!

This event was FREE and held on the expansive lawn area of Will Rogers Memorial Arena. Special table seating was available, but we did not reserve a space here. We toted out folding chairs to the event and simply enjoyed a night of music in the midst of a huge, appreciative crowd!

We listened to the sultry singing of Marcia Ball and the lively performance of George Duke on the Coors Light main stage. It was a lovely evening under the stars...and very romantic in spite of the large number of attendees.

Exhibitors and artists had booths along the edge of the gathering and food and beverage booths made grabbing a snack easy! Coupons had to be purchased first at a designated booth, then the specified number handed over to the vendors.

Large outdoor parking lots, plus an underground parking area made visiting the Jazz Festival just that more convenient!

    Ride a longhorn cow!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Have you ever rode a longhorn cow? I have lived here for 10 years and I finally experienced getting on a longhorn.

His name is Shiloh and the cowboy who owned him just finished a movie out on DVD when I was there called "Paleface" I think he said.

I must think it is a cowboy and indian movie! What an experience, come to Ft Worth and try it.

SHILOH is waiting for you :o)

This is the Visitor and Tourism center, you can get tours and information on what is happening in the city here.

You can also see the Chisolm Trail, where the West began from this very point.

    Description:
The Longhorn cattle are a group of real Texas longhorns driven by genuine Texas cowhands. Every day, the herd is driven along East Exchange Avenue through the heart of the Stockyards. It's the world's only daily cattle drive. The event is free ... you can either watch from the street, or while sitting at one of the numerous restaurants along Exchange Avenue.

Stockyards Historic District: Stockyard Historic District
  • Tip Rating:
  • After lunch, we headed to the Stockyard Historic District to have a look around, there are restaurants, shops and saloons up and down the street. We first headed to the Stockyard Station which is right off Exchange Avenue, we then made our way to the tourism office and then up and down the rest of Exchange Street popping into shops and for an ice cream along the way. At 4 pm we watched the Cattle Drive down Exchange Street and then headed over to Joe T. Garcia's for dinner and then finally to the Rodeo. A couple people made one last stop at Billy Bob's, the world's largest honky tonk, but I was tired and headed back to the hotel instead.

You can park once for all of this although we did move the car to go to Joe T. Garcia's, we probably could have walked and we certainly could have walked if Cattlemen's Steakhouse had been that evening. On the weekend you can park for $5 all day in a lot off Exchange Street around the center of that block.

    Stockyards Historic District: Cattle Drive
  • Tip Rating:
  • This might be a bit of a tourist trap but it's free and takes only a few minutes so if you find yourself in the Stockyard District at 11:30am or 4pm you might as well take a few minutes to see it. It's billed as the world's only twice daily cattle drive, a team of cowhands drives a herd of longhorns along Exchange Avenue through the Stockyards. Everything about it is supposed to be authentic and historically accurate.

We had no trouble finding a spot to watch it, in the more crowded months you may find a bit larger of a crowd and may want to stake out a spot if you want to get photographs.

I did find the longhorns to be rather fascinating to look at, many of the ones with the longest horns looked like they could barely support the weight of the horns. Try as I might, I couldn't find any reason why they would have such longhorns or why it was beneficial to breed them so they'd get longer horns. What I did find about out them was that they were the 1st cattle in North America, evolved without human intervention and they can survive in harsh conditions but were nearly extinct in 1927 when the breed was saved by some folks from the US Forest Service. The longhorn is a beef cattle, the meat is leaner than other breeds and they are a very hardy breed.
