Museum of Science and History, Fort Worth

Update:They added on to the existing structure. It is huge now with wall to wall of exhibits. Another good thing is they added a parking garage, but the bad thing is not only they charge to get in, they charge to park. Sorry, not cool! Anyways, its a lovely addition to Fort Worth.

What a really neat place for all to enjoy. This place has many hands on exhibits. Children and also the adult will have fun exploring all this place as to offer. The ExploraZone lets you experience color, energy, magnetism. Lone Star Dinosaurs you get to meet who once roam the plains of Texas. DinoDig, which you actually get to hunt and dig for bones. There's so much more to do. Also there is a Museum Store, Courtyard Cafe' and Concession Stand too!

UPDATE:The Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History is closed for renovation at this time. A condensed version of the museum can be viewed at the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, lower level.

We were drawn to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for the Star Wars Exhibit, held throughout this summer. It was our first visit.

The museum offers an Imax theatre, the Noble Planetarium, Dino Dig (picture 3) and a discovery area for children under six. Admission to the Museum of Science and History also includes a visit to the National Cowgirl Museum, which was across the way.

The Star Wars exhibit was quite an attraction for our 11 year old grandson, who thrives on Star Wars trivia. On display were Luke Skywalker's landspeeder, a hovercraft to actually try out, interactive games, all the major figures in authentic garb and a gift shop loaded with Star Wars action figures, mugs, t-shirts, etc.

A photographer was on hand to snap your picture, then superimpose it onto a photo of your favorite Star Wars character (picture 3). We thought this was a novel opportunity for $8.95 (5 x7 picture).

The planetarium (picture 4) also carried the theme and presented a sky show using the imaginary world of Star Wars to guide us through the galaxy. We had a wonderful afternoon here!

The musem's hours are Mon.-Sat. 9am-9pm. Sun. 11am-9pm. Admission for the Star Wars Exhibit and entrance to National Cowgirl Museum was $15 for adults; $10 for children 3-12 or seniors.

I went with my extended family (including my 4 year old son, and three cousins who were 12, 9 and 9). We spent three hours there and never left the first floor. Most of the first hour was spent running around on the grounds. Things not to miss outside:
- dinosaur (T-Rex?) statue across from the parking garage entrance
- a metal chair made out of letters, each letter textured with something starting with that letter (e.g. waffles for W). the kids occupied themselves figuring out each letter
- running through the fountain outside the front door

Once inside, the kids spent the rest of the time in the Children's Museum portion just off the lobby. There were so many hands on things to do that it was difficult getting everyone to leave.

This museum was fun for kids and adults (but I felt like I had an excuse going with 2 kids)! Lots of hands on activities!
