This might be a bit of a tourist trap but it's free and takes only a few minutes so if you find yourself in the Stockyard District at 11:30am or 4pm you might as well take a few minutes to see it. It's billed as the world's only twice daily cattle drive, a team of cowhands drives a herd of longhorns along Exchange Avenue through the Stockyards. Everything about it is supposed to be authentic and historically accurate. We had no trouble finding a spot to watch it, in the more crowded months you may find a bit larger of a crowd and may want to stake out a spot if you want to get photographs. I did find the longhorns to be rather fascinating to look at, many of the ones with the longest horns looked like they could barely support the weight of the horns. Try as I might, I couldn't find any reason why they would have such longhorns or why it was beneficial to breed them so they'd get longer horns. What I did find about out them was that they were the 1st cattle in North America, evolved without human intervention and they can survive in harsh conditions but were nearly extinct in 1927 when the breed was saved by some folks from the US Forest Service. The longhorn is a beef cattle, the meat is leaner than other breeds and they are a very hardy breed. Leave a Comment

After lunch, we headed to the Stockyard Historic District to have a look around, there are restaurants, shops and saloons up and down the street. We first headed to the Stockyard Station which is right off Exchange Avenue, we then made our way to the tourism office and then up and down the rest of Exchange Street popping into shops and for an ice cream along the way. At 4 pm we watched the Cattle Drive down Exchange Street and then headed over to Joe T. Garcia's for dinner and then finally to the Rodeo. A couple people made one last stop at Billy Bob's, the world's largest honky tonk, but I was tired and headed back to the hotel instead. You can park once for all of this although we did move the car to go to Joe T. Garcia's, we probably could have walked and we certainly could have walked if Cattlemen's Steakhouse had been that evening. On the weekend you can park for $5 all day in a lot off Exchange Street around the center of that block. Leave a Comment

One of the VT members laughed when I said we visited the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame over the Kimball Art Museum but I pointed out that a) where else but Texas could I find a museum devoted to cowgirls and b) the Kimball had borrowed the collection of impressionist art from Chicago's Art Institute and I could see it any time. Since we got in free because it was the Day in the District when a handful of museums were free to the public, I thought it was a worthwhile stop. The museum focuses on cowgirls and many other women such as Dale Evans and Annie Oakley who shaped the American West. There are several interactive exhibits that looked fun for kids, they can hop on a bucking bronco and get filmed which can later be seen on the Internet, have their picture put on old Western film poster or give a try at being a cowgirl or boy. We only spent about a 1/2 hour here but if you watched some of the films or come with kids, I could see a visit being an hour or two. Although I would not consider myself a zoo connoisseur, I have been to a few of the country's greatest zoos, including San Diego, and I would place Fort Worth easily within my top 10. The animals all seem to have a great amount of space to roam around, and all look very well maintained. On this particular trip, we were entertaining friends from out of town, so we ventured over to Fort Worth to enjoy this day. The first exhibit we went to was the primates exhibit. We experienced plenty of Monkeying around, and by the end, the locals were swinging from the rafters. This was much better than swinging from the raptors, which were located close to the monkeys. The lions were lying around, the meerkats were on the march, and the flamingos were busy being vain in the mirror. We did get a dust bath from the elephants, and watched a lazy rhinoceros work on his sun tan. I would highly recommend checking out this beautiful atmosphere on a great sunny day in Fort Worth! Another great event that Mark has organized for 1st Annual Big Texas VT Meet!!! Actually I do think one shouldt join/enjoy a Rodeo if one loves Texas that much as I do!!! And particulary after "8 seconds". And how NICE the dude at the mic was greeting those folks that came all the way from Germany :-)) BUT now, that I had join my very first Rodeo with all of its calf roping, and other stuff, I really don't know any more what to think about my passion for that "bulls, broncs and cowboys" thing. No doubt those guys and gals are hot as hell!! But holy cow did I feel for those tied up calfs. However, it was an EXTRA ordinary experience!! Next time though I will join the "Cowboy Poetry/Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering"! Pls check on Mark's Local Custom tips. I think there are interesting information provided about Rodeo & bull riding. That's another great spot we've been to, and like with the most places it's not easy to find any parking lots left unless you make it very much in time. As for this wonderful museum I allow myself to quote from Yaqui's tip, pls check out her most fantastic & helpful Fort Worth-tips! "This museum represents alot of hard work and attention to detail..it has twelve glass murals depicting portraits or images of cowgirls which slowly change when looking at them in a different direction. Pretty cool I say! It has so many wonderful exhibits it is a must see for sure when your in Fort Worth Texas!" Following the Karate and Tai chi demonstration, a beautifully presented program featuring the Sakura Dance Group was scheduled next at the Moon Viewing Deck. The dancer's silken kimonos fluttered gently about them as they stepped gracefully around the stage. Their music seemed to float above the spectators and beyond the viewing stage, threading throughout the garden. I loved watching these dancers! picture 2 The Flower Dance picture 3 A Solo Presentation picture 4 The Ladies are Invited In At the conclusion of the program, ladies from the audience were invited to join in on a dance-- at risk of looking the fool I did not participate, which I regret since the steps to the dance were simple and repetitive.
