The gallery opened in 1982 in historic Sundance Square.
The building itself is a replica of an 1895 building which is part of the restoration work in the downtown area.
The collection was gathered from 1942 to 1959 when Sir Richardson died. This is a free museum and attracts visitors from all over the country and the world.
This gallery has a permanent exhibit of 56 paintings by well known Western artist Frederic Remington and Charles M Russel. Sir Williams Richardson collected the paintings from 1942 until 1959 when he died. The museum opened in 1982, it was in a replica of an 1895 building in Sundance Square. Over the years interest in the museum has grown both from various other states and from overseas. They also offer educational programs for adults and children.
Sir Richardson established a foundation in 1947 for the sole purpose of supporting organisations which serve Texans. His vision has continued through the board of directors and staff who provide grants primarily in the areas of education, health, human services and arts and humanities.
